According to some recent speed tests between Sprints 4G (Evo phone and their USB stick), their "4G" speeds were about the same or slower than T-Mobiles HSPA+.
So any phone that can take full advantage of 7.2HSPA is already on par with the EVO. Marketing aside, the numbers show 4G isn't all that super-de-dupper yet.
I agree that 4G has been crap on the Evo in areas where the network isn't built out. However in good areas 4G can hit 10 Mbps, and as time goes on there will be more and more of those areas, all without having to upgrade phones...
