[FP] New Operator needed, Foldy1 needs new home.

Brian aka bbarrera See Profile has graciously hosted Foldy1
since August 2007. He is no longer able and would like
to pass the machine on to someone else sooner than
later.

This is a bare bare bones machine, Core2 duo configured to run
Linux. The original purchase was in August 2007 - see:
»[FP] Foldy-1, bbarrera

It can go to an existing host or someone new willing to take on the
responsibility of the care and feeding (power) to a dedicated
crunching machine.

To become a new operator, the following questions need
to be answered.

Please go over them and provide your answers, and if you have
any questions or concerns please me know, or post your question
here. They are all pretty straightforward, and you can reply at
your leisure. Thank you in advance for considering hosting
blade(s) for Team Helix and the Foldinator Project.

Here are the questions:

1. What Operating Systems do you have experience running?

2. Are you experienced in building PCs? If so, please briefly describe your experiences.

3. How many blades are you interested in hosting?

4. Do you have Homeowners insurance that covers, or can cover, your Foldy? Do you agree to carry insurance sufficient to replace your Foldy if damaged while in your custody?

5. Do you have the physical space to host a Foldy? It should be a dry, cool location.

6. Do you have internet access (behind a firewall) for the Foldy?

7. Have you thought about electricity costs (for system and cooling)? You have to pay for the extra electricity cost.

8. Do you agree to work with the other Foldy operators on team projects; i.e., common Stats? This is important!

And a member of the Foldinator Project.

New members are always cheerfully welcomed!

A simple modest donation is the path to membership, and lets you vote when asked as well as getting more involved if willing.

Hopefully someone will be inspired to provide a little space and electricity. Its a great contribution when someone can spare abit of time and space

It saddens me to admit I can't continue running foldy1. About two years ago I took a job with a company that sells development tools to embedded C developers. My largest customer is Palm (WebOS phones), and in my business development role I receive and work with a lot of embedded hardware (boards, phones, and other gadgets). The company is a virtual company, where everyone works from a home office. Our business has been growing rapidly and my office is no longer big enough to hold all the gear, hence I'm taking over the garage space and racking up boards that I or others in the company need from time to time.

Foldy1 comes with a case as shown in this thread:

I have some room in the cabinet for another blade if someone else doesn't want to take it on, I can.

I see no reason to wait on moving one of the blades to Brad as soon as practical?

Move to vote? I think it would have a good home with alphapointe See Profile.

Assuming this vote passes (if it already hasn't), then I wanted folks to know that I'll be traveling on business this week and won't have a chance to prepare foldy1 for shipment until next weekend (June 26).

Should I start a votering thread, or should we wait for parkut See Profile?

If a vote is required to transfer a foldy from one established Op to another (I don't know?), then it would probably be good to get it going before parkut can get here.

Matt? Anyone know if we even really need a vote for this?

From the bylaws:
Article VI. OPERATORS

Section 1. Operators for FP systems shall be decided annually by a vote of the membership.

Section 2. Operators may be nominated and run for any position on the Board.

Section 3. Operators must have the Foldinator system replacement cost covered by their home owners or renters insurance.

Section 4. The members, by a 2/3 majority vote may approve, the change/switch for a specified amount of time and what the power of the foldinator will be used for. In no event will the power of the foldinator system(s) be used for any team outside of BBR.

Section 5. In the event an Operator no longer desires to continue operation of a Foldy, is unable, or has been removed for cause by the board, all donated equipment received shall be returned to person designated by the President of the Board with shipping expenses paid by the Association funds. There is only one exception to this and that is anyone who has purchased the entire system and remains sole owner of said system. This exception requires a board vote of approval.

Wouldn't Section 5 apply? If so, maybe Matt just needs to make the designation?

It won't require a vote just to move it to an established operator. I don't think we have many folks knocking the door down to be a new Op right now, so we should be able to approve this by agreement. Once bbarrera See Profile is available to ship it, he can do so, and submit his costs of shipping for reimbursement.

If another person comes along and wants to be a new Op, there's still two more blades ready for a new home, so we won't be cutting anyone out of a chance to be a new host.

I was hoping it could be that easy since an existing Op is volunteering. I know there is a process for a new Op.

Cool. I have cables ready for foldy1. I'm going to set the machine on top of the cabinet for now, until I can get things moved around in the cabinet to make room.

Sorry for the delay, it was my wife's birthday last weekend and I'm slammed at work. Will ship on Saturday.

Due to the space crunch I'm selling my Mac Pro, in case anyone is interested:

Foldy1 is now correctly showing up as foldy2-02 on the trackers:

»foldy.nozero.org/index.php

I'll change the IP address as requested by alphapointe, and box/ship tomorrow. My apologies for the delay.
