Yeah, sounds like we're heading back that way, but with data, except now with a 300% markup! | | elray join:2000-12-16 Santa Monica, CA Reviews:

Yes, some of us remember the days when only government-connected entities provided internet access, and you couldn't buy it at any price.
Prior to AOL discovering the internet, however, there were plenty of ISP's offering "unlimited" access, which was usually moderated by a busy signal. Smarter ISPs did enforce access limits, either with 100+ hour caps, or session limits during peak hours.
I'm not sure what's wrong with a "300% markup", if there are enough willing buyers. If the margin is so excessive, then a competitor will cut into it, or no one will buy it.

Back before AOL's $20/mo 'unlimited' dial-up plan? Yeah, sounds like we're heading back that way, but with data, except now with a 300% markup! Take AT&T's plan... $25 dollars for 2GB of mobile data. (Forget the tethering charge because I STRONGLY disagree with paying $20 a month to simply access data already being paid for) But, if more people are getting along today with WAY under 2GB of data, I'd consider the $5 reduction a good deal especially if one is already using far less than 2GB. I only downloaded 1GB the entire year last year. I do use my iPhone for quite a bit, however, much of my use is when I'm sitting in a fixed location and there is wifi 95% of the time for me. Apps on the iPhone use very small amounts of data for the most part.
If they're starting to head off high surges in data, they're actually smart to do it now instead of later when most people will actually go OVER the 2GB limit (att) becuase THEN it would be honest to cry foul. If 50% of the customers were steadily over 2GB a month, say they were at 4GB a month (which they aren't) and they capped it at 2GB, then yea, that would be very greedy.
As it stands now, and MOST people love crying "greed" anytime a price is changed especially when it forces a leash on someone (aka, network management methods) However, att, at least, is saying it's the onset of more video, higher quality and larger files being moved around, WHICH IS VALID and can't be argued on. So right now, a majority of the actual AT&T customers here that don't come CLOSE to 2GB have no reason to cry greed or anything that sounds like it. If HQ video is going to be one of the driving forces of the higher data use/needs, then people are warned now to watch what they're doing. Perhaps if people don't want overage charges then they should 1) consider watching HQ video when on WiFi 2) consider if they REALLY need to transfer the entertainment data they are such as streaming radio, XM, etc. (XM does make a receiver that you can listen to 24/7 and have no worried about ANY data use or coverage, by the way) and 3) figure out what they really need while on the go.
2GB of data is actually a lot of data for mobile use. I think people are crying foul, greed, and everything else wrongly.. And how is data "now with 300% markup"..? Where are you getting that figure from anyway, even if it were to be true. | | Zoder join:2002-04-16 Miami, FL | reply to Jahntassa Actually it was AT&T worldnet that came up with it first. Of course that was the old AT&T that SBC purchased. The new AT&T is really SBC with a new name. | | fldiverPremium join:1999-12-27 Jacksonville, FL | reply to fiberguy You are of course entitled to your opinion, but it's just that, and is not necessarily any more right than others expressed here. | | | reply to fiberguy Fiberguy -- I agree with your main points. I have an Android phone on a very limited (50 Mb) monthly data allowance from a prepaid carrier. Yes, I'd love to have 200 Mb instead, but it's easy for me to see that 2Gb is a TON of data for mobile use. The high bandwidth use is mainly for streaming video or audio. If a user wants tons of bandwidth for constant entertainment, why shouldn't he pay more than those who use the device for communications?
Last time I looked, bars charged per drink and movie theatres per person, per show. | | fiberguyMy views are my own.Premium join:2005-05-20 kudos:3 | reply to fldiver said by fldiver:You are of course entitled to your opinion, but it's just that, and is not necessarily any more right than others expressed here. Either you're not reading, or you're not understanding how to read a post and assuming more in your own mind than what is really there.... my opinion is ALWAYS my opinion.. if we're talking about hard facts then that's another story.
