Charter drops calls constantly

I also live in Agoura Hills and went to Charter based on this post. I left AT&T DSL because I was tired of their internet cutting out periodically during the day. So I signed up for Charter Duo, $60 for internet and VOIP. Good deal.

When it's working, speeds are OK 17809 Kb/s down and 1004 Kb/s up, with 16 ms latency right now.

The problem is the intermittent internet connection. It's always going out for a few seconds to a minute, and when it does, it drops the VOIP call. This happens multiple times a day. When surfing the internet, it shows up as sites that won't load

It's so annoying that we are going to switch when we move to a new house next month. Trying to decide what company to go with, since I didn't like AT&T DSL either. Can't get UVerse or FIOS at the new house.

It sounds like your house might have a wiring or splitter issue. If you haven't moved and still have the issue, I would use DSLR's either paid or free line monitor to track the connection issue. Then also call Charter and tell them you're having this problem - let them figure it out.

In my situation, I had the connections made in the entry - right in the garage. Less chances for inside wiring problems.

Garage has a UPS, Cablemodem connected to Wireless Access Point, an ATA (for VOIP) connected to house telephone wiring, and Charter MTA connected to ATA. Office inside the house has another Wireless Access Point for desktops. Notebooks and other devices use whatever Access Point they are closest to.

In hindsight I should have kicked Charter's butt to fix the problem, but I knew I was moving and didn't feel like spending the hours necessary with tech support.

I have moved and installed AT&T DSL. It took them five days to get it done, four calls to tech support finally got a tech out to discover that not only was it provisioned wrong but the switches on the B-box down the street were reversed. They only credited me one month's service for several hours of calls with tech support and five days of delay.

Then it took about a half hour on yet another call to tech support to get it set up correctly. I'm fairly competent with tech issues, but there was no way I could have done this without tech support guiding me through it. Prior to the call, I could never get to a website that provided me with enough information to get anywhere, so I was stuck. And the set up was fairly complicated.

Anyway, so far the DSL has been pretty good. The 3.0 / 512 service was running at 2.5 / 400 when I first got it going, not great but not horrible. I think speed improves the longer the connection is maintained, but I'm not certain of that.

They supposedly upgraded me to the 6.0 Mbps service as of yesterday, but I have not checked it yet (I'm at work).
