Business class voice/internet modem

I recently had voice added to my service, the tech installed a second modem that resulted in an unsightly messy install. After some research I determined that the Motorola surfboard SBV6220 should meet my requirements in a combined unit.
The Comcast rep I spoke with regarding this said that the only unit I can use is the one that they provide. Is this the case in all markets? I am planning to have my voice switched back to Verizon as the install was just 2 days ago. I will not put up with slipshod installation of inferior components with extraneous wires to save a couple of bucks.

you can use any modem with dhcp service...if you have any static ip's you are required to use the SMC....also how would using a different modem make the install any different?

The two modems both require power and a feed via a splitter. They are not modular or of uniform size or shape. I had my wireless router in the same location, there were only two outlets.Quote from the tech;"I guess you'll have to get a power-strip or something, I'll just unplug your network for now..." Thanks a lot! I am not a heavy user and a combined unit would solve this problem.
I know the Comcast network could support the modem I found but they require I use the unit they provide. I can think of no reason beyond price that would make internet voice superior to a traditional landline in any way. Am I missing something here?

whats your setup now? (equipment wise)
how many lines do you have? (phone)
do you have docsis 3 speed tier? (maybe they didnt have any docsis 3 emtas)

so your mad because two modems arent the same size, and because you need a power strip?

also whats inferior about them? you didnt comment on that

Mr. Picky, that is an SOP install and an SOP answer and SOP equipment. If you are unhappy, give it back to them and use a cell phone. I did.

I am mad at myself for falling for a pitch. Sure the equipment provided will "work" and yes I can buy a power-strip I can even clean up the install. But why would I want to. I am letting off steam here. I only have one line that is a dedicated fax line and after telling every one involved this was the use three times. And even hearing the tech tell the office from my recently ported line that this is a data only line, I realised today that I had voice-mail installed. This was the reason my fax tray was empty. I have posted as "Mr Picky" because I am a zip tie and wire loom kind of guy. But even if you are the kind of guy that never casts an eye into the equipment room you might be better served with a professional telephone service provider. Comcast is trying to get into this market because it will be lucrative for them as telephone uses comparatively little band width.I think they just aren't up to the job as far as customer service goes, (15 minute hold after clearing the gates). arrgh! BTW, Yes we have XFINITY!
