Re: Nvidia GTX 470 question

said by ztmike:

Got the card today..what a pain the ass to install..never in my life have I had so much trouble putting in a GPU..I think it was my case design that gave me trouble..
I have a Coolermaster CM 690 and I had trouble putting in a gtx 280 when I built the machine. These video cards are just getting bigger and bigger. They're longer than the mobo's and in some cases there isn't much room past them so it's a tight fit with the power cables on the end as well.

I actually had trouble fitting the GPU near the wall of the case..the PCI-E slot by that wouldn't go in ..I think it was because of the design on the GPU where that little clip thing is..

Hopefully the 8800GT I'm buying I won't have the same problem..

Nice card, but I would buy the XFX simply because of the 2x lifetime warranty.

Good thing is now when prices drop, you can buy another 5870 and Crossfire them.

XFX has a nice support staff and warranty..but their product quality is subpar.

I did homework on it as I almost purchased one from them, and heard way to many horror stories of shady hardware quality.

ASUS has a very good reputation for quality and overclockablity with their cards.

As far as Crossfire goes..putting that on the backburner as I purchased a 9800gt for PhysX work in games.

Well..the pcie slot that the 9800gt goes into doesn't work..and I'm not returning the board (yet) so I'm selling the 5870 and buying a gtx 480.

I made a thread in the for sale section for the 5870, if anyone is interested.

Figures this would happen to me.

What happens when you plug the power plug into the card without the card in the PCI slot?

Don't know..I gave up on it. The 9800GT is in the box and under my bed

I called ASUS and told them what was going on with the motherboard and my 2 cards and what I was trying to accomplish, in the end they told me that the board doesn't support Nvidia and ATI hooked up.

After I got off the phone I switched the 9800GT to the spot where my 5870 was and put the 5870 in the 9800GT spot and computer booted ..but I got no video on either card..

If I could redo my build I honestly would of went with Intel i7 and a SLI board. But that doesn't mean I'm not happy with my rig I did build. Although I will say I'm pissed at ASUS.

I will probably just buy a 5850 or a 5870 to do Crossfire..I just hope that what ASUS told me was true..because if not and the pcie slot really is dead, I will be out $300-420 on the new gpu when I do buy it. I have tossed around the idea of just buying a cheap ATI pcie card to test but haven't looked yet.

The 9800GT card DOES work however..I installed the card in the slot the 5870 was in and the drivers for 9800GT installed without a hitch.

To prove that I saved this snapshot from the card.

No board supports nvidia + ATI officially - So no, you won't get support. This is why earlier I reccomended against it as using an nvidia card for physx with your ATI card as the main card is iffy at best.

it's not the motherboards that don't support it. It's nvidia's drivers. Nvidia won't allow their cards to work as physx if you have an ati card for video. There is one old set of drivers out there that broke that lock, but nvidia quickly fixed that bug.

that just backs up my point. That is about a hack that you have to use to get it to work.

Jesus read at least part of the thread besides the first page.

Some of newer Nvidia drivers work if not the newest ones, and also, the drivers I was using were the right ones.

I'm not a dumbass.

why are you so touchy? I never called you a dumbass. In fact, my first post wasn't even in response to anything you said. A person posted that no motherboards supported ati and nvidia together officially. I simply pointed out that it is not a motherboard problem, but an nvidia blockage.

And no, "some of the newer Nvidia driver do NOT work. only 1 recent driver was bugged and had the block broken, but that was fixed immediately. When that happened, Nvidia stated that that was an accident and they were going to continue blocking this combo in their drivers.

And I did read several random pages in that link you gave, I saw nothing that disproves what I said.

Agree with you there. I was just saying that no manufacturer will give you technical support if you try using both together.

You never said it, but you might as well have. Don't you think I already knew about the Nvidia drivers have ATI blocks on them?

And someone on the Overclock forums has said they thought Nvidia dropped the ATI ban on their newer drivers..so I don't know 100% on that.

And that thread I linked..its very old with alot of replies, if you want to read half of the updated info/comments its best to do it near the end.

Yes it seems to be the motherboard (obviously) since there's so many other people on that thread using ATI and Nvidia together, ASUS even stated to me over the phone that their motherboard doesn't support it..as I have already said in this thread. The ASUS tech support guy even doubled checked with a manager there supposedly.

Anyway just beating a dead horse now.
