Re: [Asterisk] PlugPBX system, unboxing and updates! Finally, I managed to compile/install FreeSwitch-1.0.6 for my DockStar device. A preliminary configuration with a Gizmo5 account works as expected. At the moment, I am pretty happy with what I have now. So, it looks like I may have to ditch Asterisk Project for this device. -- don't and stop are the ONLY two 4-letter words considered offensive to men, but not when used together. |

How would you rate the difficulty of freeswitch configuration vs asterisk's? I have a relatively simple setup in mind: Two softphones would connect to the dockstar which would have 2, at most 3 outbound SIP channels. The failover can be manual/prefix based. I usually prefer editing text based configuration files, so lack of GUI would be a non-issue. -m |

I believe FreePBX v3 is based on FreeSwitch and it is GUI. -- don't and stop are the ONLY two 4-letter words considered offensive to men, but not when used together. |

How would you rate the difficulty of freeswitch configuration vs asterisk's? I just can't tell. I am still learning on how to configure my FreeSwitch (FS) PBX system at the moment. FS looks very complicated, but looks can be deceiving. There is plenty of online docs to help one to configure his/her FS system. AFAIK, it is a much powerful PBX server than an Asterisk PBX. It also requires more CPU resources, RAM, and space than an Asterisk PBX. Since a DockStar device is based on an ARM CPU clocked @1.2GHz with a built-in of 128/256MB RAM/Flash, it sure has the juice to host FS. For $24.99 + Free S/H (to US), this is a steal, IMHO!
I have a relatively simple setup in mind: Two softphones would connect to the dockstar which would have 2, at most 3 outbound SIP channels. The failover can be manual/prefix based. If you can achieve these tasks using an Asterisk PBX system, I am sure you won't have a problem to do the same things with a FS system.
I usually prefer editing text based configuration files, so lack of GUI would be a non-issue. That's the way to go, AFAIC. -- don't and stop are the ONLY two 4-letter words considered offensive to men, but not when used together. |

However, I loaded it up and just do not like the new gui. |

3 edits | reply to mazilo Did you install OpenWRT and the rest directly to the device replacing its OS, or you installed it to a USB Thumb drive connected to it, so it can dual boot? What approach is better? Did you try to dual boot - is it possible?
Did you try to add FreePBX V3? Is it easier / more intuitive to configure FreeSwitch this way? Any problems installing it?
Anyone would be interested to port Transmission Torrent Client to this device with OpenWRT and try download a larger torrent to an attached USB HD to see how it goes and what the speed is? |

What approach is better? Did you try to dual boot - is it possible? I use this PogoPlug SetBoot to toggle boot between the original OS on the NAND Flash device and an external USB partition. When my DockStart is running on its original OS, a reboot will boot off of an external USB partition that contains OpenWRT OS. Another reboot will boot off of its original firmware and so on.
Did you try to add FreePBX V3? No. I prefer to use a plain-vanilla FreeSwitch on an OpenWRT firmware.
Is it easier / more intuitive to configure FreeSwitch this way? For me, plain-text configuration is the best, YMMV.
Any problems installing it? For me, no problem, YMMV.

This software has already been ported to OpenWRT SVN trunk and/or BackFire release version (see here). -- don't and stop are the ONLY two 4-letter words considered offensive to men, but not when used together. |
