Are there any 'golden rules' on early game item purchase order? I'm sure it varies by role, but the number of options within each role still leaves a newbie a pretty undecided.

It really depends on what role/champion you are playing that game, the new store does a pretty decent job at showing you the best options.

Before this big patch boots + health pots was the opening meta for many champions.

starting items

adc / ranged auto attacker
Dorans Blad (use for heavy early harass or when u have a sustain support)
Long sword w/ 2 health pots. (More regen if you aren't with a sustain support and want some staying power + in 400g you get a vamp scepter)

solo lanes
2 wards / lots of pots (mix of mana and health for preference)
Ferie charm / ward / pots (builds into early chalice)
bottle / wards / pots (lots of sustain bottle is better if you need more than one run of consumeables)
cloth armor / 5 pots (get if going against ad)
boots / 3 pots (kindof meh now but a possibility if u need to dodge skill shots)

jungle
machete / 5 pots - only option really

support
1 pink / 2 greens / ferie charm / 2 pots (takes 2 points in starting gold)
bottle / wards
all wards/ pots (get a pink, good if you want to invade and need to cover your buffs)

First backs

adc
dorans blade (not neccessary if you started with it)
vamp scepter
boots (you really can wait now due to boots not adding that much MS)

support
gp10 (philo stone/kages pick) - get if useful to you
ruby crystal - best item in game builds into everything
dorans shield (want to be tanky)
WARDS!!! (dont forget these)

solo lanes
wards (at least one)
dorans ring / dorans blade /dorans shield are effecient if you need em
haunting guise (mpen / health / ap good for casters w/out mana issues)
chalce (mr for against ap / mana regen for casters/ ap bruisers)
Ap/armor item (forgot name its new / get against ad mid if you are ap or are rushing zhonyas)
gianst belt (to get tanky)
brutalizer (bruiser looking for dmg)

jungle
razor (for auto attacking junglers)
spirit stone ( for ablities or for the upgrade)
boots (faster ganks / jungle movement)

So after 3 days of losing to 3's vs. intermediate bots, my wife, friend and I (all new to LoL) learn that intermediate bots have 15 points of mastery, 16 runes, a tier 2 quintessence and a passive bonus to gold gain.

In the grand scheme of things, are these bots supposed to be moderately difficult or are we just underperforming?

I know a lot of the snowballing can be credited to early feeding since we're still learning character abilities and dying to things we could've better anticipated if we knew the opponent's skill set.

They will feel OP especially on intermediate until you have understanding / runes / masteries. They will score perfect combos pretty much every time you get in range so you really have to know how to beat champs mechanically. And if you don't have runes they do have an early game advantage as well.

Annie bot still carries bot games.

We had a Ziggs/Leona bot pair that was just completely obliterating us. Ziggs would drop a mine field behind us then Leona would charge-stun & burst while Ziggs used a satchel knockback to blow us into the mine field and follow up with his ult. So very dead.

We don't have any runes yet really either. Have been spending IP to unlock a few characters until we inevitably start handing them our $.

Switching to just going against other players tonight instead of just getting wiped by intermediate bots.

Other players aren't as mechanically sound but they bait and will bush camp random shit and go extremely aggressive lvl 1 / 2.

Play safe and just poop on mistakes and you should do ok.

Oh, and in your absence, I have become the cait master. Unless i have a support nid from BR who takes all my farm and kills. Then I have trouble until late game when I CARRY ANYWAY!

That happened last night. I became solo cait mid game with no farm, and no kills. I went to any lane I could find and stole farm. I became jungle cait. I controlled dragon myself. By the end of the game, I came back with 296 farm and a full build. Almost a positive score, but it was a BR team, so everyone except me was in double digits for all 3 categories. They play to kill, and only to kill.
