Agreed. IMO, VZ kicked off a large initial push into FTTH partly as an advertising gimmick. Longer term, VZ might have been better off to slowly deploy fiber deeper into it's markets. A FiOS/Uverse hybrid rolled out over a decade might have been a more fiscally sustainable plan.

How was their FIOS plan not "fiscally sustainable"? They're still a highly profitable company.

ROI and take rate aren't where management want them to be. Just because a company can afford to keep throwing money around, doesn't necessarily mean it should...especially in downturn markets.
