Uverse Fiber to the House?

Quick question - the Uverse sales guy came by the house a few days ago trying to get us to sign up. I ask the questions about my location in the neighborhood in relation to what I know is one VRAD box and how many HD streams are available (this is an older neighborhood so no fiber underground in the neighborhood, etc.)

I got the 2HD/1SD answer but then he said:

"now what we would do is we can run a fiber line all the way to your house along the normal wires and do a drop from there"

Is this something they are doing or even feasible or is it just empty sales promises?

For 90% of people, it is beefed-up DSL.

Older neighborhood? Can almost guarantee it's a DSL setup.

Sounds like empty sales promise. Unless you can get him to put it into writing.

AT&T (and its predecessor, SBC) only runs FTTP in "greenfield" communities; which is to say, only for new home construction. They may, someday, overlay the copper plant with fiber, but they are currently concentrating on FTTN in older communities. Faster and cheaper, but the "Last Mile" is still copper.

I agree with the other responses, based on what I've heard, your being fed a line of bull----. AT&T is not going to run a fiber to your home unless your paying for it.

I've heard that some of these contracted sales people will promise you the moon if you agree to sign up. (One around here apparently promised a customer a brand new Xbox 360. Slammed the door on the tech when she didn't have it.).

That's what I thought. I know that they have put down in fiber in new master planned communities when they get in early enough but it sounded awful fishy to me.

The sales guy was bit pushy, but really wanted to get me to sign up for an order on THAT DAY than have time to research things further. I had not heard that they were running fiber along the poles for a moderate density neighborhood.

It's funny, my previous experience with AT&T on the business side always showed me that their tech and customer service folks were better than the morons that Comcast sends out. But any deviation from "the order in the system" creates huge problems for AT&T, like they can't improvise at all even thought they know what to do.

You think that's bad - they had door to door people go down both sides of my street a few months ago trying to talk people into Uverse/left door hangers but none of the addresses on either side actually qualify to order Uverse. Talk about a colossal waste of time and effort on their part.

What does that mean the last mile

I though UVerse only had a distance of 3000-3500' that not a mile were I went to school.

Last mile basically means final leg of the cable to the premises, not necessarily a "mile"

"Last Mile" is a loose term. It isn't supposed to be taken literally.

There were two D2D salesmen knocked on my door and I ruined their day telling them the whole town they were in would not get Uverse for years. It is not even on the company maybe some day list yet.

My neighborhood is presently going through AT&T's Uverse re-wiring (or whatever) They installed what I assume is a new VRAD in the development, but they are also digging holes (not ditches) at every single pedestal. Numerous AT&T line trucks in here every day. So what's up with that? Does the copper get replaced with new copper for enhanced DSL?

They may be completely replacing the peds, but typically they are all dug up to cut off buried bridge taps & replace any bad splices & bonds

Digging up every ped in an area is a sign U-Verse is coming

Do you know if you are in a FTTC area? If you are in a FTTC area in the former BellSouth area, you might be becoming one of the early adopters of FTTC U-Verse, where all the peds MUST be replaced (different electronics)

I don't think so. It is a former BellSouth area but about 20 years old, and I'm pretty sure it is only copper. Probably what you said about replacing bad splices is all that's going on. I would be very surprised if AT&T did more than that.
