Phone calls cripple the internet.

So here's the scoop.

We've got Vonage. The network is setup as follows

Cisco/Linksys Cable modem (The model escapes me sorry, but it's small, square and black) -> Vonage VPortal -> 10/100 5 port switch -> three computers.

Every single time a phone call comes in and is in progress internet activity is crippled. Webpages time out, pings time out.

Has anyone else experienced this? It's kind of pissing me off and getting ready to ditch vonage.

The internet is FLAWLESS until a phone call comes in, suddenly that small voice line just brings the entire network to it's knees.

Thanks for any help

You always have the option on placing the VPortal behind a router, it doesn't have to be sitting in the front. Just have it process calls and nothing else.

The VPortal's bandwidth shaper will reserve much of the bandwidth for call quality at the start of a call and back off what it limits as the call goes on, based on what it thinks your bandwidth is based on tests it runs periodically. You can change the values of your bandwidth that the VPortal will think you have by entering appropriate values in the QoS section of the settings, therefore fooling it into not limiting as much bandwidth.

You can go to the Vonage website and set up the call quality. That may help you out.

I agree with voiptalk - put the portal behind the switch.

I read up on Vonage in this forum prior to receiving my adapter. From the many recomendations, I too have to agree with putting the VPortal behind the switch. I have mine setup as such and it works fine with no network issues with phone, internet and faxing.

Unless the OP's cable modem is actually a modem/router combination unit (and the majority of cable modems are just simple bridge modems), then putting the Vonage adapter and three PCs on a switch connected to the cable modem will likely not work at all.

Most cable internet connections will only supply one IP address by default, so only the first device to receive a DHCP address from the cable modem will be able to access the internet, and the others will just be in limbo waiting for a DHCP assignment.

Actually, voiptalk's advice was correct, but that advice was to use a router, not a switch.

No need to be such a wanker but yeah, it should be router instead of switch.

When you offer advice on the internet to people who are not technically oriented, you need to be careful to not offer bogus advice. Causing problems for others may not be of concern to you, but fixing those problems is indeed a concern for some of us.

No problem. Everyone makes mistakes now and then.
