New Speeds

Check out the website for the updated speed tiers. Seems they are now official.

Not in my area (enter area-code 44512). We don't even have the speed upgrades to the current tiers I heard we were supposed to get over a year ago.

I notice the pro is only 15/3M @15044, while 17363 has 20/3. Looks like some areas will continue to have different tiers like the 5/8Mb places now.

Got my 50/5 installed yesterday and I'm somewhat pleased. During the day it flies, but at night I've seen downstream speed tests as low as 6mbit/sec. It's not the node, as using Armstrong's own speed test shows full speed, but it seems there's congestion further up the path.

I'm thinking about dropping down to 30/3 based on this, but I'm going to give it the rest of the week first.

Jim,

I spoke with an inside source over the weekend. We will be seeing a speed increase on the current packages by the end of October. It was delayed due to an issue with the headend. We will also be seeing DOCSIS 3 packages.

I wonder if I will be able to purchase a doctored tier. I don't need 50mb download. I would rather have 10-15mb/s download and 5mb/s upload... a 10/10 would be even better.

I've been told Zoom 500 is going to 10mb/s downstream, not sure on the upstream.

If you look at the zip rawgerz See Profile posted (15044) through Armstrong's website it says 10/2 for 500 (15/3 for Pro). But I do use the upload more and more. I use JungleDisk backup a lot but some uploads take days or weeks. I would like to have more upload speed but I don't really need a 50 download just to get 5 upload.

Only October? That's not fair. I emailed them a few months ago and this area won't see anything until sometime in 11. Considering this rural county has the 2nd largest population of 120K right behind Butler, this doesn't seem right. And Butler (16001) has had it for awhile now. But even that area didn't see the first upgrades which happened in new markets way out in other parts of PA and for some reason, WV.

It's going on a system by system basis, their logic for who gets it first is unclear.

Update about a month later: This connection flies and there's no way I'm going down to 30. The 5mbit upload is great and usually I can get 6-8mbit for some reason. The downstream is a bit more inconsistent, but not as bad as it was on the Pro package, and still most of the time it's over 30mbit/sec. I love being able to game, stream HD from Netflix, and download updates at the same time without anything being notably affected.

Same here. Nice of Armstrong to upgrade speeds about a month before I will probably be moving out of town... <sigh />

Even sadder thing... I have been looking at cable in various areas and so far it looks like Armstrong may now be the fastest cable op in Ohio.

Update 2, a few more months down the road...

They've obviously sold quite a few of these faster connections. As I type this, some link somewhere upstream of my node is flooded out on the downstream. I can test at 49.94/6.83 on Armstrong's internal test site, but using the external tests at speedtest.net I'm getting between 1 and 3 down by 5-6 up. depending on the location I test to.

For the last week or two, during the day I can usually solidly expect 30 down, but between 4 PM and midnight-1 AM or so the ceiling's just over 10. After that when people start going to bed though 50 works just fine.

That said, it still feels a bit silly to me to complain when my worst-case speed is better than my previous Zoom Pro top-end. I'm reopening the possibility of dropping back to 30/3, that will be decided by how well Armstrong responds to the current problems. I have not opened a case yet myself, but I have read posts of others who have and it seems to be an acknowledged issue, I just have a habit from working tech support myself of gathering as much documentation as possible before opening a ticket when the problem's a non-emergency.

Here in Titusville(16354) I was upgraded to 15/3 at the same price as our 10/1.5. I am Wondering if the 30 or 50 are available? It says they are on the website when I input my ZIP, but the tech that was here today says that they are not available yet.

We have had nothing but trouble since the upgrade in mid-December. Poor phone quality, modem loses sync and resets about every 2 hours, packetloss. if I go anywhere off of Zoominternet(Armstrong) my speed drops to 2/3.
