Re: [ps3] yLoD prevention, I hope

system is still toast once the solder breaks down
Solder? what solder? at what point did I solder anything here?

I don't even own a soldering gun, much less know how to use one.

BGA solder breaks down on the CPU/GPU/other chips that heat up and cool down

because they used lead free solder "ROHS compliant "

That's just it. I didn't solder anything. you have me all confused, because it read like you're saying I soldered something within my PS3... how could I do that when I don't even have a soldering gun?

i did not say you solder anything

the real issue behind YLOD is the solder breaking down

thermal expansion and contraction breaks the cheap solder that SONY used

the only 20/60gig that are left

are the ones with very limited play time(low number count thermal cycles)
ones that Run fold@home 24/7
or the ones left on 24/7 with limited thermal cycles

I am going to great lengths to avoid thermal cycles on my system by running a heatpad under the system before I use it and after I turn it off

I have reflowed mine now about 4 times. First time i used the Dynex thermal paste which is junk and the last 3 times i used the AS5 paste. I also added a laptop cooling pad to sit the PS3 on plus i added an 80mm fan blowing into the vents on the right side. I also left the top cover off. The past several days now(after a period of time) a message will pop up saying the ps3 is hot and i need to shut it down for a while. i have never seen this message before. the PS3 doesnt shut off, it just displays the message.

I was going to do the AS5 "update", but found out I still have 4 months left on extended warranty. So I will wait until it runs out before opening it up.
I have the fat version. I also have a NYKO fan on the back of it. It seems to keep it cool. You can feel the hot air coming out when it is on.
Plus I have it sitting on a tv stand off the floor about 3 feet from a/c vent also. When I had it sitting on the floor. It was HOT all the time. Just to add...Since moving off the floor and adding the NYKO, the PS3 internal fan has NOT been on at all(or I have not heard it). The internal fan was coming on while sitting on floor(it was LOUD).
I have been told by a bunch of people putting fans to blow on and in them.

Could your temp sensor be bad? When I first got mine. I had to play for at least 3-4 hours BEFORE it went to high. I thought it broke. It all of a sudden got real loud, I went to pick it up and it was HOT! I was playing Metal Gear Solid 4 at the time.
Like I said. After I moved it and installed the Nyko fan, I really haven't heard the fan at all. I know I played online for 3-4 hours the other day, then my son got on for at least3 hours. It stayed normal.
I did unhook my Nyko fan on day by accident, it wasn't long before I started hearing the normal fan start to wind up.

re-flowing does not mean cleaning up the thermal paste and putting new thermal paste (ie AS5)

Re-flowing is when you remove the PS3 (or xbox) motherboard and heat up the GPu & CPU using a heat gun so that the solder melts/flows so it fills up the cracks it has made from the heating up and cooling down cycles.
