 jfd15 join:2008-01-07 West Sacramento, CA | dumb question dumb question but as the technology advances aren't we able to chop up "the spectrum" into smaller and smaller channels(our devices will use smaller slivers all the time?), so that eventually these problems will be solved?
i mean like the TV channels, where now they have 3 in the same space they used to have 1 - are we advancing much in this area lately? |

Digital broadcast television because of the additional noise of the over the air environment can at best only squeeze in half as many channels as digital cable. If a station broadcasts in High Definition and either has a subchannel or alternatively broadcasts ATSC Mobile / Handheld they have used up nearly all of their 6 MHz of spectrum. OTOH stations that only broadcast a single Standard Definition signal are wasting at least 2/3rds of their spectrum. Yes there is already more advanced technology that is more spectrum efficient but unfortunately it is incompatible and would require a second digital television transition. |
