Re: dumb question It's not a dumb question. Digital broadcast television because of the additional noise of the over the air environment can at best only squeeze in half as many channels as digital cable. If a station broadcasts in High Definition and either has a subchannel or alternatively broadcasts ATSC Mobile / Handheld they have used up nearly all of their 6 MHz of spectrum. OTOH stations that only broadcast a single Standard Definition signal are wasting at least 2/3rds of their spectrum. Yes there is already more advanced technology that is more spectrum efficient but unfortunately it is incompatible and would require a second digital television transition. |
