Add area code 931 also. I used to be able to call my mother in that area code but lately I can only get the beeps. Pretty much makes the MJ useless for me at this point. I guess Ill cut my losses and just go with unlimited cell phone service.
I don't care how cheap it is I'm not going to pay for something I can't use as I want. Sucks they did this AFTER I renewed! : |

If enough people report blocked numbers, we can make a sticky here or in the unofficial MJ forums. If we could compile a reasonably complete list, we'd undo the marketing subterfuge perpetrated by MJ in not revealing what's going on with calls to rural exchanges. |

C'mon folks, wise up. Give everyone a break. If you are only going to post an area code, it's not very helpful.
Give the area code AND the exchange (the next 3 digits).

Please file a complaint with the FCC. Long distance carriers are required by law to complete calls to higher-cost local exchanges.
VoIP companies try to avoid this law by claiming to be merely a computer software application, not a telephone service. In the case of MagicJack, they are essentially the same company as YMAX -- a nationwide CLEC, registered in all states.
Recently Google blocked entire rural exchanges. AT&T complained to the FCC. Google backed down, blocking only 100 numbers associated with abusive "traffic pumping" services ("free" services that are paid for by the higher termination fees rural exchanges are allowed to charge).
Filing a complaint with the FCC only takes 2 minutes. Only 2 pages to complete. If the FCC receives enough complaints, they may lean on MagicJack not to disobey the law in the interest of being "more competitive." And, more importantly, it will help motivate the FCC to address modernization of the law in question.
For example, local exchanges shouldn't be allowed to host traffic-pumping services. It was those services that are impacting you now. If MJ hadn't blocked those services 9 months ago, I doubt it would have felt emboldened to block all rural numbers in an exchange today. |

Similar problems here, but I've noticed that I can call local cell phone numbers, but not local or long distance landlines in a small communities. For instance I can call Fargo, ND (long distance) a larger community - no problem 701-356-xxxx. I get the three beeps when I call Garrison 701-463-xxxx (long distance) or Rugby 701-776-xxxx (my own number) smaller communities. I can call my own cell phone with MJ and cell phones across the country without a problem.
Frustrating that small communities are being shut out of another aspect of the digital economy.

What matters is that the destinations you are having trouble calling are served by fairly small (or VERY small) rural-type phone companies. Apparently MJ does not want to pay the higher interconnection fees. Just an observation, I don't know which side is right.
You should complain to your local officials, the Governor, your Congressional delegation, your state utility regulator, and to the FCC. Seriously. You need to make them aware. |
