Re: AMD 6 Core

Keep in mind that for gaming, even dual-cores still perform just as well in 99% of the games out there. So I wouldn't invest extra money in anything beyond quad-core right now.

^ This is true, especially considering Octavean's quote.

Guess you never played new games then, most new games are taking advantage of ALL cores.

Hell even TF2 had a update recently to take advantage of more than 4 cores.

It's not about games -using- all cores.

It's about the fact that the benchmarks show that even last gen dual cores like the E8400 pretty much perform on par with current-gen quad cores. Games just haven't advanced enough in the CPU usage department where they are truly using them to their full potential.

Yes, I *guess* I have played newer games, such as Metro 2033 or any number of other titles. I've yet to have issues with my E8400 in any of the newer titles to come out. If I were to upgrade my CPU it would be because I was doing encoding/decoding/whatever type of tasks on my computer - Not for gaming reasons. It seems a bit silly to spend the extra cash on a 6-core CPU when the games will hardly see the benefit.

I could understand this logic if the person already has their system built. But for those wanting to build a new rig, it wouldn't make any sense at all to still go with a dual core..dual cores are dead in the market IMO which is why they are so cheap.

If someone were want to build a new rig it would make sense (IMO) to just go ahead and get the 6 core like the one being talked about here.

This is exactly what I did..I wanted to build my first gaming rig and do so but went with AMD as it had 6 cores and is very budget friendly compared to Intel. And the fact that AMD doesn't change their socket type every cpu they come out with was even more of a reason for me.

Although I am no AMD fanboy, my last computer that I had was a Intel E5200 (2.5GHZ Dual Core) and I actually got lag in my games from that cpu.

Never said go with dual core.

I still wouldn't go with a quad. You wouldn't even be saving that much.

O and Metro 2033 is a GPU intensive game. If you want to test your CPU play GTA 4;Liberty city.

And what you said about games not using more than 4 cores..is simply a lie.

If Valve is putting out support for more than 4cores you know damn well current games being made are also.

Have both games, and the E8400 has no issues with nearly maxed out settings.

Whatever man, not going to argue with you over a stupid thing as games using more than 4cores.

To the OP: if you have the money go for it, you will be pleased that you did in the end.

How does TF2 even use 4 cores?

Couldn't answer that as I don't play TF2 that much, and haven't bothered to test it.

It seems to be an upgrade to their Source engine as it wasn't just for TF2.

You know what's fun? Play the game in windowed mode at a res smaller than your desktop while you have a CPU usage gadget running in the sidebar, preferably one that shows usage for each core. I only know of one instance of TF2 using four cores, and that was when the renderer got stuck in an infinite loop.

I thought about doing that..but then the game won't take advantage of my cpu as much as if it was in full window mode.

I'll probably try it anyway later today sometime, as I just woke up and my head feels like a whirlwind from the beer I drank last night. :/
