Re: Kompromat

He isn't out of the woods yet

quote:
Assange - who has denied both accusations - is still suspected of molesting a woman on Aug. 13, but molestation is not a sex crime under Swedish law, said Karin Rosander, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Authority.

It covers a wide range of offenses, including reckless conduct or inappropriate physical contact with another adult, and can result in fines or up to one year in prison.
Lets say it was sex without a condom as requested by the woman, perhaps her idea of 'harm minimization', so I would have expected Julian to respect that, but we will have to wait to get further details as to what exactly was the 'issue'.

Also from the same article

quote:
Assange and his group suggested that the accusations, coming as WikiLeaks prepares to release a new batch of classified documents, were part of a smear campaign. In an interview with a Swedish newspaper, Assange even pointed a finger at the Pentagon, which has warned WikiLeaks that the leaked documents could endanger U.S. soldiers and their Afghan helpers.

Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell on Sunday called Assange's charges "absurd."

The lawyer representing both women, Claes Borgstrom, also dismissed any foreign involvement in their complaints.

"There is not an ounce of truth in all this about Pentagon, or the CIA, or smear campaigns, nothing like it," Borgstrom told Swedish news agency TT.
Perhaps Julian might be interested in Tin Foil condoms

Re: Wikileaks - Exposing Dark Side of Afghan War

Sometimes I find the press/media to be just stupid and lazy, for example:

quote:
A physics Ph.D, Assange hasn't shied from taking on both government officials and the press. Media profiles have detailed an unsettled upbringing - the Australian press has reported Assange attended dozens of schools growing up - and he still seems to live on the move, his computer traveling with him in a backpack.
Julian has a Ph.D, that would be interesting considering other sources said he never finished his undergrad degree. For one of the most complete write ups on Julian Assange see

Re: Kompromat

I realize it's not as titillating as fantasizing about Julian Assange's sexual conduct, but I think you missed something in the article you cited:
said by »www.google.com/hostednews/ap/art···9HQLNSO0 :
[M]olestation is not a sex crime under Swedish law, said Karin Rosander, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Authority.
Whatever the investigation is about, it's not about a sex crime.

As for the speculation on motives, in False Charges Ricochet in the War on WikiLeaks, Scott Horton observes:
said by »harpers.org/archive/2010/08/hbc-90007522 :
As I wrote in “WikiLeaks: The National-Security State Strikes Back,” a highly classified Army Counterintelligence Center 32-page memorandum noted that to eliminate the threat presented by WikiLeaks, the United States would have to strike not simply servers and databases, but against the individuals who were critical to the operation of WikiLeaks. It repeatedly identifies Assange as a target, describes the leaks as criminal acts and advocates “successful prosecutions” to “destroy the center of gravity” of WikiLeaks. The suspicions raised by Assange are thus hardly unwarranted - they match the Pentagon’s own plan to take WikiLeaks out of action. However, there is as yet no direct evidence for the claim that the accusations leveled at Assange were the work of some intelligence service, and even if there were, Assange has plenty of governments anxious to shut him down aside from the United States. But as this incident makes clear, the war on WikiLeaks will be fought with unconventional tools and those following the story are advised to accept nothing at face value.
Sounds about right to me.

Assange investigated AGAIN For 2 crimes

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100901/ap_···ikileaks
A senior Swedish prosecutor is reopening a rape investigation against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the latest twist to a case in which prosecutors of different ranks have overruled each other.

The case was dismissed last week by Eva Finne, chief prosecutor in Stockholm, who overruled a lower-ranked prosecutor and said there was no reason to suspect that Assange had raped a Swedish woman who had reported him to police.

The woman's lawyer appealed the decision and on Wednesday Director of Public Prosecution Marianne Ny decided to reopen the case.

Ny also said that another complaint against Assange should be investigated on suspicion of "sexual coercion and sexual molestation." That overruled a previous decision to only investigate the case as "molestation," which is not a sex offense under Swedish law.

So now he is on hook again for the rape charge. And the other charge has been upgraded as well.

I figured he wasn't out of the woods, so the drama continues on. From »www.nydailynews.com/news/world/2···ned.html

quote:
According to reports, the secretive Australian who serves as the chief of WikiLeaks, a whistle-blower website, is accused by two women of refusing to wear a condom during sex and being tested for STDs.
The STD angle is new and might explain why this was reopened (ie the tests came back), but I'm sure this is far from over.

Now for something complete different »www.wikileakileaks.org as you had to know it was going to happen

»online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-201···119.html

quote:
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has applied for residency in Sweden, the Swedish Migration Board said Tuesday, even as police questioned him over allegations that he molested two Swedish women.

"He has applied for residency but the application is still being processed," spokeswoman Bodil Sunden said.

Assange is expected to try to register WikiLeaks as a media organization in Sweden which would protect the anonymity of the whistleblower site's sources and prevent them from being prosecuted.

Martin Valfridsson, a spokesman for Sweden's Ministry of Justice, said the site would have to be registered with the Swedish Radio and TV Authority and a responsible publisher appointed.

"The publisher needs to be a physical person who is a permanent resident of Sweden," Valfridsson said.

Re: Wikileaks - Exposing Dark Side of Afghan War

Wikileaks pulls every string you might feel strongly about (either way!): truth, honesty, transparency, integrity, accountability, veracity, secrecy, probity, responsibilty
( heh: be interesting to see what antonyms might turm up in a thesaurus for "wikileaks" )
Assange is finding out about a price to be paid if one dares to hold up the mirror.
Little doubt Assange is some sort of amazing individual.
He and friends have created a storm which at best has created new paradigms and at worst reminded us of the power of one.
Long way to go.
Some info and opinion here:
Some of the writing is a bit confronting

Sweden is being confronted at many levels by wikileaks.
Real test for that admired constitutional monarchy and and justice system there.

Update: Sweden reopens rape probe of Wikileaks founder

Swedish Prosecution Authority | September 1, 2010

quote:
Decision on the request for review

Director of Public Prosecution Ms Marianne Ny has decided on the request for review in the Assange matter.

The investigation concerning rape will be reopened.

- There is reason to believe that a crime has been committed. Considering information available at present, my judgement is that the classification of the crime is rape. The basis for further considerations is not sufficient at the moment. More investigations are neccessary before a final decision can be made.

The investigation concerning molestation will be extended to include all allegations in the original police report.

- There is reason to believe that a crime has been committed. Based on the information available, the crimes in question come under the heading of sexual coercion and sexual molestation, respectively.

Director of Public Prosecution Marianne Ny will be leading the further investigations. She will be assisted by Deputy Chief Prosecutor Ms Erika Lejnefors.

- Due to the investigation and the persons involved in the matter, I cannot give more information concerning details in the investigation.

Assange may be forced out as Wikileaks leader

some fellow WikiLeaks activists are considering asking him to step down from his role as the group's public face, or ousting him if he won't leave voluntarily.

Two people familiar with the site's internal politics, who asked for anonymity to discuss them, say that moves are already afoot to restrict Assange's role. One of them says some activists, concerned that Assange had misused WikiLeaks' Twitter feed to suggest the Swedish investigation was the product of "dirty tricks," are discussing whether to limit his access to the service. And they say anti-Assange factions within the organization are talking about putting together a summit later this month or in October at which Assange's future with the site would be debated.

Ironically, while WikiLeaks' online manifesto proclaims that "better transparency is at the heart of less corruption and better democracies," the organizers appear to be almost as secretive as the spy agencies they condemn.

An insider says the organization may have a governing council of nine members--but it's unclear who they are.
Is pressure being applied to some of the 9 insiders, who theoretically are anonymous, that control Wikileaks. The CIA probably knows who they are no matter how hard they try to cover their tracks.
