It's admirable that the IT department was willing to put in the resources to help this guy.
Of course, MAC addresses are completely spoofable. This recovery succeeded because the thief didn't know how to cover his tracks or didn't bother.
Nah, the thief was an idiot for stealing a laptop from student that attended same university.
