| Is It Bad To Keep A Desktop On A Carpet? I just bought a new Desktop PC for my Mother, and she wants me to set it up and put the actual Desktop on the carpet under her desk.
Is this a bad thing to do? Is it a myth that placing a Desktop on a carpet could cause it problems? -- If you need a re-format, just ask and I'll do it. If you don't need one, just give me 5 minutes with your computer, and you will. |

In theory it should be raised up due to potential static electricity. I've seen people take a block of wood to put their system up on. |

| reply to lordpuffer If it's flat office type carpeting usually not that much of an issue. If it's a fluffy type carpeting, as lordpuffer stated, try to raise it up on a block/laminate shelving/piece of wood. My old setup I just used a piece of wood a bit bigger then the tower. Now I just have a desk that has a raise bottom with cross bars and a piece of wood on top of the cross bars and PC on the wood. |

 | reply to lordpuffer Static should only be a problem when you are opening the case and touching components inside or building a system. With the case closed up static won't be a problem.
With the system low to the ground it is going to get more dust in it. Depending on your mother's housekeeping habits this may or may not be a nuisance. It may need to be cleaned out more often.
Depending on the arrangement under the desk, how surrounded it is or how much airflow is possible under there you could have a greater likelihood of heat issues. It will probably be fine though.
Just keep an eye on how quickly it gets dusty inside and whether temps look reasonable. |

japPremium join:2003-08-10 038xx | reply to lordpuffer I'll amplify (greatly) what asdfdfdfdfdf said: dust, dirt, bugs, hair. Simply raising the box up 2-3" will greatly reduce the entry rate. Dust kills cooling: coats HDDs, chip cooling fins, and clogs heatsink fins, and ladens the leading edge of case fans. Generally people under estimate how much it reduces cooling.
Unless your water cooled then nothing to worry about. |
