If as you say the motherboard only supports a PCIe video card in 1X mode, then you have to set the BIOS video to PCIe 1X. You likely have it set to PCIe 16X now.
The PCIe 16x slot on the motherboard should then operate in 1X mode (emphasis on should). Make sure the video card is fully seated.
