I suspect that the only real reason that AT&T is getting a lot of these devices, is that many are pushing GSM / HSPA chipsets with GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and HSPA 850/1900/2100 for the 'global' market vs.

CDMA 850/1900 US primarily (Sprint/VZW)
HSPA supporting AWS vs. 850/1900 (T-Mobile).

HTC/Samsung/LG tend to support them all, while others (Apple / Motorola) have been picking their bands. RIM traditionally supports (or supported) all, including iDEN (yeah - i had a BB 7100i).
