Considering Alabama has one of the lowest "take" rates
in the nation for Broadband... I wouldnt count on it.

»www.connectingalabama.gov is crafting a policy
but it's more concerned with getting something
to as many people as possible.

Yeah... that'll happen.

In other news, the legislature has decided to re-write the constitution, abolish all blue laws, establish state-run casinos in every city, and made every Friday in football season a state-wide holiday.

Having lived in Auburn for 5 years (while suffering through Charter), I'm glad to see some competition coming to Lee County.

You left out Comcast. In my day job I've had some involvement
with the Alabama Broadband Initiative (ALBI) and I cant recall any
mentioning of muni fiber projects.

You have some areas where it just doesn't make economic
sense. They either have to be subsidized or wire
themselves. This is makes deployment in Alabama even
harder because of the below average "take" rate.
Forgive me but I don't have my notes handy -- I believe we're at ~ 50%
while the nation is closer to 65%. This low rate just
compounds the problem as providers don't want to invest
in many areas.

and with that take rate that low the chances of a muni project actually taking off and going some where is less than 50% on average right?

So like i said before. why should someone that doesn't want this project to go forward have to pay for it?

Why the devil are you conflagrating subscriber take-rate with chance of project failure? You are so, so, SO idiotic. Augh.

no because that subscriber take rate figures if the project is going to make it or sink.

YOu must not know that. And talk about idiotic, you don't even make that mark.

Not really. Just because only 50% of the homes past take your
product doesn't correlate with a 50% chance of not taking off.

Without knowing the underlying cost it's hard to say. In this
case the Power Co-Op has an existing fiber ring. This may
drive down build out and or maintenance cost.

So like i said before. why should someone that doesn't want this project to go forward have to pay for it?
Well since it's being financed with revenue bonds vs general
obligation bonds how are you paying for it?

For that matter the majority decided it would be good for
quality of life and or economic development.

Finally, I don't like the new street the town voted on.
Why should I have to pay for it?

Let's see here, 63% of the people in Opelika who decided to show up voted for the fiber net. I'm guessing the system would be sustainable with even a 30-40% take rate and, if things are as bad as it sounds, that will be dead easy to do.

First revenue bonds still get their money from somewhere else- ie the city services; water, electric, etc. those rates can go up to pay for services that never come out.

2nd due to the majority deciding when the network flops they'll be bitching about that and the rates going up. The Gov't has no business in private business. If they wanted another provider they should have hired one to move in and gave them tax breaks to do so.

Streets are different than the Internet.

They BORROW the money by issuing bonds backed
by the revenue of the muni service. That's what
a revenue bond is.... They are not general obligations
of the city. The only recourse the bond holder has is
against the revenue of the FTTH project.

Internet service is very much turning into a utility in
many respects. Without proper infrastructure
economic development is hindered. If the majority
wish to pursue this... more power to them.
