Capacity Issues Addressed September 15th?

I just found this in my mailbox this morning. Looks like VHO4 will be seeing a major change in channel delivery soon. I'm guessing this will be the SD channels moving to IPTV, although, I'm not sure what the Tivo solution will be. Hopefully, whatever it is, my Moxi will still work. I can live with only HD channels on one cable box.

I love how specifically non-specific that letter is. I wonder if this has something to do with CCI flagging and pairing now being required to get those channels? Based on (what little) I know about how that works, I can't see that being the case. I think all CableCARD-capable devices have to be able to accept pairing, plus I don't see how having a TiVo "recently connected to the TiVo service" would change anything.

It's possible it is IPTV, and, if so, maybe it has something to do with that announcement from Cox that TiVos would be able to work with its VoD system. If Verizon intends to deliver channels in a similar manner, I could see where having a recently-updated TiVo would matter.

Speculation is fun!

It has NOTHING to do with IPTV...

The 3rd paragraph is the important part of the letter - 'certain' devices will have a problem with CC's after the network upgrade is done...

OK, so what could it be? I looked, and all CableCARD devices have to accept pairing to be Labs-certified. There's only a couple other theories I can figure: SDV or going to a 1GHz QAM overlay. "Older" devices may lack USB ports or can't tune to 1GHz.

Please don't tell me this has to do with Verizon starting to enable CCI flagging...

It does make you wonder... Elsewhere and in response to the CCI flag changes made in Frontier markets before the transition, Verizon did say they would be implementing the same changes across their entire footprint.

Of course, you always have to take those sorts of statements (even when stated "officially") with a grain of salt...

Both of my Tivo Premieres are now paired with their cable card, this happened over the past three days. It's only a matter of time until Verizon enables CCI flagging....I live in Silver Spring, MD - I think I'm in VH04?

Yes, it does make me wonder because it specifically is targeting CableCARD devices. The fact that people in Frontier areas were told that Verizon was going to enable CCI flagging nationwide doesn't make it look good either. I always had hoped someone was just saying that to comfort the Frontier customers during the transition. Hopefully, for our sake, it isn't enabled. If it is, so much for FiOS trying to set itself apart from cable...locking content down to limited devices is definitely not how people want to use and view their content now or in the future.

I'm sure if Vz really had a choice, they'd rather not make the switch to fully implementing CCI flags -- I'm pretty sure the pressure is coming from the content providers.

I better check mine out. I need to move my cable cards around again. It will be a pain if I need to get a tech out just to move the cable card.

Easy - they want to make sure all TiVo users have downloaded the latest firmware.

So, how did it happen? By itself? Or did they contact you about it, or you them?

Montgomery County actually mentioned this letter in their comments to the FCC this week regarding the AllVid solution, but they also didn't seem to have a clue what was going to happen to their residents.

It definitely sounds like they might be pairing cable cards and potentially older devices don't support the pairing.

Has something to do with something called Simulcrypt that's being implemented. Have no clue what that is. Apparently will not affect Tivo, but will affect ATI based tuner cards. These cards will only get locals.

No answers from 888-329-5568 in letter. I have two Verizon-provided Motorola S-Cards in the cable card slots on two older Sharp Aquos LCDs. Wondering if these two cable cards will be affected on 15 September.

And LOL how they say "Please contact VZ to discuss alternative equip. options..."

Gee, there is only one option - rent a HD box or HD DVR.....so VZ charges you triple what you are paying for the CC, some option, huh?

Sounds like this will prevent people with PC cable card tuners from watching (and recording) all the channels on their Computer? Hummm.....and interesting how the timing is right before/as the Ceton InfiniTV 4 (quad cable card tuner) is available for purchase.

Since Ceton InfiniTV 4 is newer, I wouldn't expect it to have issues with pairing.

I know it's fun to frame this as a conspiracy plot to get people to rent Verizon hardware, but it's really silly if you think about it. It probably cost them more to send out the written notice than the revenue lost by 3rd party device users not renting STBs. The user base is so infinitesimally small that it's really not worth time, effort, and money to screw with them and try to strong-arm STB rental.

The situation is simple. Channel providers are putting pressure on Verizon to secure their content better and not all 3rd party devices support what needs to be done properly.
