Re: Capacity Issues Addressed September 15th? said by ylinen:So do you know if implementing Simulcrypt will cause customers with Windows Media Center using ATI Digital Tuners to stop working? It does seem that Simulcrypt is something the device has to specifically support since there was much talk awhile ago about Moto and Cisco NOT supporting simulcrypt in their STBs. This is probably why they are asking Tivo owners to make sure they are up to date.
I did find this though that doesn't bode well for ATI tuners.

He got on the phone with level 3 tech, he said that neither Microsoft nor AMD (ATI's parent company) responded to their requests to add support for the new encryption when Verizon contacted them. Ceton accepted the change and said they will incorporate new encryption into a patch. So, it looks like its up to the hardware provider to keep their product up to date and support the encryption and ATI(well AMD) doesn't seem to support the tuners anymore.
This change is all to prevent vendor lock in. Moto STBs work with Moto Cablecards and Cisco STBs work with Cisco cablecards. The head end equipment has to support the encryption the cablecard uses which is proprietary between manufacturers. Moto and Cisco obviously do this to lock the MSO in so they are the exclusive vendor to them. Simulcrypt bypasses this by allowing them to use multiple different types of encryption on a single network which then allows them to use both STB vendors at once. |
