Agreed for the most part, except for the fact that Verizon has certainly chosen to "cripple" my first-gen Droid by not allowing for wireless tethering. Say what you want about Apple, but they don't usually cripple a product to make it's successor more compelling less than a year after the original's release. It's absurd. Verizon and Motorola don't have anywhere near as much goodwill with me after pulling this bullshit. I may actually be switching back to the iPhone/AT&T after my contract expires with Verizon.
Sure they do.
yep.. I don't know what world sprkleMotion is living in but Moto, Apple, Verizon, etc all cripple their phones on the same level.

My problem with my Motorola Droid is that it is:
1. a product that was launched less than a year ago, and
2. is a product that is currently being sold.
and still Verizon/Motorola have chosen to lie about its capabilities and deliberately disable WIFI tethering for the clear purpose of upselling the Droid 2.

In my experience with Apple products (and I may be overlooking something) Apple has not crippled a product in such a manner when compared to its successor within a year of the original's release.

The iphone vs the iphone 3g is full of examples. Ever since ios 3, apple has neutered the original iphone, even though the hardware on both phones is nearly identical. MMS anyone? Video recording? Apple is a prime example of a company crippling products to make artificial market segments to increase profits.

Apple instead launches a product without a feature (like mms) stops selling the old one and requires you to pay full price to upgrade to the new. At least with the Droid it isn't full retail price which is the whole point.

IIRC, none of these products were released with less than a year between each other. The Droid was THE best Android smartphone to get when it launched, and it has not even been a year.

I have an original Droid. How am I able to get the new Droid 2 at less than retail price as you allude to? If you're talking about the carrier subsidized price for renewing a contract about 16 months into a two year commitment, that does not help current Droid owners. What's more, the same subsidized pricing has been available to iPhone upgraders as well. I'm not sure I'm understanding you?
