| A couple of points to make cdma vs CDMA
GSM, in its earlier versions, up to incluing 2G/GPRS/EDGE was using a tdma philosophy for air interface. (time division multiplexing, each user is garanteed bandwidth once you get a channel.)
GSM in its 3G inception (UMTS/HSPA) is based on a cdma philosophy. Similar to original ethernet. It is a collision detection scheme, similar to the original coax ethernet. You use as much bandwidth as you like, as long as you dont detect that you are causing collisions with other users.
In terms of apple and veriziong crippling the iphone.
Apple seems to have set some rules about carriers not crippling certain key features of the iphone, but Apple has allowed carriers to select to cripple certain other features. For instance, many carriers configure the phone to prevent the user from knowing/editing the APN settings for data transfers. |
