| DNS server Hello I have a problem with the DNS server numbers, the one gwi assigns appear to not work or work very slow and 50% of the time the page request time's out, so I remove there dns in my modem and use 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 this works great, the trouble is anywhere from an hour to a week later gwi changes them back, does anyone know why they do this or how to stop this from going on?( I am not sure how they get into my settings as the modem is my own and passworded. ) It sucks to have to change and reboot my modem at there whim. Any help? Thanks Bruce |

| Hello thanks for the reply it is not that 4.2.2.2 does not work well it is Gwi Injects there own dns servers that are very slow ,I have no idea why, plus they are the gateway for gwi and not real dns servers so I wonder how and why they inject this on my modem. they appear to be able to override my password and change my settings. | reply to braynes I agree with the OpenDNS solution... plus it's a great way to block some annoying domains |

If i place onendns or the 4.x.x.x dns servers the name resolution is very fast, I do not understand how gwi can get pass my password and change my modem config, any ideas on how they do it or better yet HOW to STOP them? Yes I know that, my router has it built into the modem, the PROBLEM is GWI changing the setting in the router to some kind of redirect or some traffic control or perhaps monitor as the browser will time out(180 sec.) before the dns lookup comes back about half the time The dns lookup takes 30secends or more for each address this should not be happing. Please do call GWI support at 800.229.2096 , we are open 24 x 7 thank you, Rik support@gwi.net 800.229.2096 open 24 x 7 I have sent email to gwi 3 days ago as of now no response, As for calling I have explained to gwi many time and can not hear, so email it is. The router is built in the modem it is a zoom, when I remove your dns servers from the config and add the 4's i do not get the log mess. the problem is at least once a day gwi changes my 4.2.2.2 to that 207. series and the browser times out and gives these errors. so no other complainants, ok I play for now , I just ordered a new draytek modem will be her Friday. I truned off the zoom and will put the new one on and see what happens, thank you for answering this post. Bruce |

riik1 join:2002-04-20 Biddeford, ME | Hello, We are sorry for the issue. We have had no other reports of DNS issues from any of our users. Can you please re-connect the modem that GWI sent you upon sign up and again monitor the DNS issues. I suspect the issue is one of the zoom modem/router is interacting negatively with GWI's DNS servers. By re-connecting the GWI modem we can eliminate the zoom as a possible contributor to the issue. |

A year or two ago when the modem gwi sent me it did not work well and smelled hot and burning at about 3 weeks I emailed gwi about and have an email from gwi say they run hot and all is well, I considered this bullshit purchase my own and sent your back later in the day when I have time later in the day I will look up the emails, the modem was sent back to gwi ,I paid for a return recipient so I will find and post that as well. To answer your question NO I can not hook up a device I do not have. I was you would check the emails you have been sent over the course of my service and you would know all this and not be wasting your time asking this shit. Bruce |

| reply to braynes It appears the round trip time may have a lot to do with the network IP address lookup, so if I could just use open or 4.2.2.2 it would make me happy and the troubles would go away, Did you people change your system, as for no other complaints, you modems do not allow accessesay so how would people know? They would just think they are timing our"slow internet-bad time, etc". Bruce

 | reply to braynes Maybe you need to check your facts first. 207.5.17.1 isn't one of gwi's dns servers. It's 207.5.171.1. You can tell by the Whois record they don't even own that ip space.
Are you saving the settings in your zoom unit? Sounds like your not and when your dhcp lease renews your it picks up settings from gwi and gwi isn't over writing your DNS settings your router is.
Have you tried updating the firmware on it? Also what's the model number and firmware your using? |
