 | Vonage works for incoming but very poor quality outgoing Hi There, thought i would see if anyone on here can help me. For months now our vonage phone has been terrible on outgoing calls to the point that it's useless but incoming calls it is next to perfect.
Our internet provider is Wightman here in ontario. We have fiber to the home and are getting really fast upload and download times and most of the time good results on pingtest.com also.
I have spent ages on the phone with vonage and they have talked to wightman but so far have got no where.
It's really frustrating when you know this phone should work.
Anyone got any thing i could try?

 2 edits | Are you saying that if somebody calls you, the voice quality is fine in both directions? And that if you make a call voice quality is terrible? Or are you saying that incoming voice is fine but your callers don't hear you well no matter who makes the call?
It would be odd to have good two-way quality on incoming calls but not outgoing. On the other hand, it is quite possible to have poor quality in one direction, while not in the other. But if you have fiber to your home (is that true, or is it fiber to your local box, then copper to the home?) you should have a robust connection.
I use Vonage Canada in Cobourg ON (fast cable connection) and in Brazil (relatively slow DSL). Quality is fine in both places and has been fine for years. So I know Vonage Canada quality can, and should be, top notch.
I would check to make sure your router is set up correctly--assuming you are using a Vonage ATA hooked up to a router. You mention good speed and good ping results. What about jitter--which can wreak havoc on VOIP? Have you tried any of the VOIP speed tests, which may be more helpful in diagnosing your issue.
I would also test some other VOIP services to see what happens. Can you make clear calls with Skype? It's a different system, but if you have bandwidth or provider problems you might experience call problems with Skype. (Plus, it's free to test).
There are many things that could be problematic, including a faulty Vonage ATA. Has Vonage offered another adapter?
I also notice your provider offers its own phone service. Could they be engaging in traffic prioritizing that discourages the use of competitors' VOIP and favors their own service? I would consider that unlikely, but anything is possible. Have you tried contacting your provider yourself? It seems they have a pretty good reputation for service.

I have wondered about wightman doing something to make vonage not work great so we would have to switch to them. That is part of the reason i have not switched. That and we like have a kitchener phone number and no having to pay long distance (there long distance is just 2 cents a min but it's still something, other than that both are 20 bucks a month) Is this really possible that they could be doing something?
What we have been doing is using skype for outgoing calls (2.99 a month) and it does not work perfect but works fairly well.
Any thoughts?

 | That's quite odd. I doubt your provider would be doing anything, but if they were it would almost certainly affect both incoming and outgoing calls. The fact that Skype works and Vonage doesn't is a little odd. However, they're different VOIP systems using different ports, so anything is possible.
You don't by any chance have QOS turned on in your router, and perhaps incorrectly configured, do you? If it is turned on, try turning it off.
Have you tried assigning a fixed IP to your Vonage ATA? This isn't usually necessary with Vonage, but might be worth a try. A google search will help you find instructions. It depends what Vonage device you use.
Have you tried a different phone? If you're using a cordless try a wired phone as an experiment. Also, if using a cordless try changing the channels on your router as an experiment. Again, I would think any problems with routers/phones would affect all calls, but it's worth a try.
Are you using house wiring in your VOIP setup? If so, connect the phone directly to the Vonage ATA to see if that makes a difference.
There are lots of other VOIP possibilities aside from Vonage that can offer a Kitchener number. But with most you'll have to buy an ATA for $60 or so. But in the long run they'll likely be cheaper. I like Vonage, but it is expensive relative to other providers. I suppose there is a chance you'd run into the same problems, but if you did it would help you narrow things down. If you're interested I would recommend voip.ms.

I'm not real good when it comes to configuring the routers. I'm not bad on a computer but when it gets too in depth i'm lost. I probably could try to do it.
We have tried different phones and i have tried changing my routers frequency. Also tried a coarded phone. It was the same.
I am thinking of giving another VOIP provider a try. Was thinking of V Buzzer because i can keep my same number and use in online and with a phone (I think) It's 9 bucks a month, $30 to port my number and like you say about $60 for a VOIP router.
With voip.ms i'm guessing i could probably also keep my number, is it the DID numbers i would be looking for with them? I am a bit lost with all the terms.

| A provider such as Voip.MS has new numbers available for you. That's what is listed on their website.
To transfer your CURRENT number is called porting.
You can contact their customer support to see if your current number can be transferred (ported) to them. |

You're welcome. And yes, you would be looking at DID numbers from voip.ms or other services. PX Eliezer has done a good job of explaining the porting concept. I would go with voip.ms before VBuzzer--much more flexibility and better service. |
