adsl2+

if verizon would have kept most of it's sold-off copper neworks, perhaps they could have gotten taxpayer supported funds to improve that part of the network, but it's looking less and less likely that significant expansion of the copper network will happen. that's why the dsl2+ equipment is getting cheaper all the time, as the fiber elements get cheaper (thus MORE cost effective per bit), obviously the inferior technology has to be at a lower priced tier related to keep customers (aka TELCOS) interested.

someday I'm gonna bet that at&t will end up getting money to upgrade some of the southern footprint to fiber... and expand into good roi geographies of qwest (the better alternative to a merger).

Huh?

Though you're right, ADSL2+ IP DSLAMs are cheap. I know Verizon doesn't use these guys but they *could*:

...or use a DSLAM that supports bonded ADSL2+ for even higher speeds...

...they could get a significant number of customers at the RT level, though that might require, you know, building out fiber to their RTs that don't have the capability right now.
