Ubuntu 11.04 to remove Synaptic

»www.webupd8.org/2010/09/ ··· oon.html

Yes, Synaptic will be dead in 11.04. You can still install it, but it won't be in the default installation of 11.04. The software center is coming along quite nicely, but for those who absolutely need to have Synaptic, it will be optional. I still prefer Synaptic over SW center.

I like Synaptic better, as well. However, I have been particularly pleased with how well update manager has come along to this point. It makes keeping your system updated trivial, even if you're one to forget to do an apt-get update then apt-get upgrade sometimes(ok, I admit it!). I understand this move and don't mind it, as it is very trivial to use your frontend of choice in Linux. I usually run apt-get or dpkg via cli when installing stuff, anyways. Update manager then handles keeping it updated, along with ksplice for the kernel.

I'm going speculate wildly but isn't Synaptic a front-end GUI for APT?

If that's the case then this could be an invite for the community to diversify the front ends?

I see no need for either of them.

sudo apt-get search package

sudo apt-get install package

is extremely simple. Not sure why this is so hard for some people.

It's easier to search the Synaptic list for random software then it is to scan through the apt list.

Sure, apt is simple if you know what you want, but not so much if you don't or don't really care what you find. What I mean by that is going down the list of games in the repos and checking the available screeshots right there to find games that look interesting and add them to the install cue.

Apt is also very intimidating to new linux users, as is anything having to do with the terminal.

I agree for the most part...

unless you happen to get

$ sudo apt-get install gnomechess
E: Couldn't find package gnomechess

Opps I dont know the EXACT package name. Tab completion does work sure... but not always all that useful.

Synaptic/softwarecenter is what lets me search for stuff.

Some people aren't wizards when it comes to Linux. I know I'm not. So the less hassle in updating packages, files the better. I know automation can open the door to malicious behavior, but it also opens the door to people who thought Linux was all geeky college stuff.

If you search for something and feel there is too many extraneous results, we can limit it to things that actually say chess by chaining the output of the command through the magic of grep. It has helped me find many things by varying key terms with grep. Something none of the GUIs match, as of yet.

Utter laziness.

As a bit of vindication for me, I once had to have a secretary of ours type in commands to update an old lighted marquee outside, ~:$ sign type deal. She flat out refused and said, "I don't need to learn any more how to do this..."

We have a new secretary now.

How about apt-cache search chess? It will find any package that has the string "chess" in it. If too many results in more than a page of results pipe the outlet into less. All of this stuff you guys claim is only possible in the gui, or much easier in the gui has been possible to do very easily for a long, long time. You want to know what a specific package is/does? apt-cache show packagename.
