Severe Connection Problems with Verizon DSL

For the past few weeks my 768kb down, 160kb up service has been very slow, with typical speeds (from the speed test tool right here on DSLreports) averaging out at about 110 down, 130 up. The modem, curiously, reports the speed as 576 down, 160 up. What could possibly be creating this massive slowdown? My router is fine, and the configuration is basically automatic - nothing customized.

FYI My house is located 3.5 miles from the CO. I have a Westell 6100F modem and a Zonet ZSR 0104CP router.

Transceiver Revision: 7.2.3.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved

Transceiver Information | Downstream Path | Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 608 160
Margin (dB) 6.5 14.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 63.5 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 13.7 11.5

As you indicated, your line does appear to be pretty long. If you have access to a NID, can you plug the modem into the test jack located inside of the NID and pull up the statistics the modem shows? Post them up for us to see them, as the correct sync rates for the 768kbps package is 864kbps downstream, 160kbps upstream. Let's get the sync issue sorted before we start troubleshooting anything else.

We have an inside terminal, which appears to have been installed around the time of our home's construction (1911), and an outside one, which is simply a pair of screw terminals joining the company phone cable to the inside terminals feeder line.

In other words, there is no test jack.

Here's a recent Speedtest.net result:

It produces a faster result than the tests here, which report much slower speeds.

Here's a java result test from DSLreports. The speed is much slower than Speedtest.net's test result.

Speed test result is abysmal. Looks like you have two separate problems.

1) Poor circuit preventing modem from syncing at correct speed.
2) Possible congestion either within or external to the ISP that is further degrading performance.

Try doing a Traceroute (tracert in Windows) to stable sites like BBR. That will give you some idea where problem is occurring. Latency should gradually increase with distance and hop count. Sudden unexplained increase typically indicates problem with that hop or previous one. You can also do the line quality test on the tools page here at BBR.

When you run the speed test are you sure none of the other computers in your LAN (if you have one) are using the Internet? On the PC running the speed test make sure there are no applications using the Internet while the test is running.

Since you do not have a modern NID try disconnecting all the non-DSL devices from the phone line. Reboot the modem. If stats improve one of the devices is degrading DSL performance.

I just disconnected (physically) two possible trouble devices: the fax machine and my DirecTV reciever, leaving only two devices hooked up, both phones. All of these devices are/were filtered.

Power-cycling the modem afterwards produced this result:

The speed is better, but I noticed that every time the modem is power-cycled the speed is that much better. I noticed at this point that my up speed seems to be fine; 83% isn't half bad.

Tracert to www.dslreports.com produced nothing but "Request timed out" in every trial. Out of curiosity I did tracert again to my public IP, and several other websites; same results. Maybe I did something wrong. How should the command be used? This is exactly how I had it formatted:

tracert www.dslreports.com

FYI I do have a LAN, it has 2 computers. Connecting my PC directly to the modem did not change anything.

Here is a recent line test result from BBR:

»/linequality/nil/2672814

And here's an even more recent one:

»/linequality/nil/2673109

If the stats did not improve on the modem after you disconnected some devices, you'll need to see what can be done inside of your home with the wiring to improve the statistics. Many here prefer the route of running a dedicated cable (CAT3 cabling) to the modem from the NID, and then using a POTS/DSL Splitter at the NID to filter the DSL signal out from the rest of the home. Other than that, once the home's wiring is checked and accounted for, you'll need to see what Verizon can do to improve the conditions on their end.

Other than that, if the edge router/circuits prove to be overloaded at the time of your tests, we can have Verizon Direct put in a ticket to have your line moved onto another edge router/circuit.

I have a question about these congested edge router/circuit.

1)Does verizon monitor these edge routers to make sure they are not congested?
2)When switching a customer to another edge router, do they make sure the new edge router the customer is being connected to is not congested?

I would have to say yes to both of those, but I also believe it depends on the area in which there are problems. Some areas they seem to get congested or problematic for months on end with nothing going on to get it resolved. I can't give you a definite answer however.

@Smith6612

I have recently filed a post with Verizon Direct. They've finally noticed that my line is not receiving optimal bandwidth, and apparently something is being done about it, but speeds are still slow.

I'm thinking of installing an in-line DSL splitter, such as this one:

When the DSL was first activated, the DSL line shared a phone jack with a fax machine through use of a plug-in double-outlet. Connections were intermittent, so I replaced this Verizon supplied solution with an actual 2-outlet jack. With the slitter in, the modem's jack could be wired to the cable's unused pair, which would be wired to the splitter. Sound like a good plan?

Sounds good to me. Using the unused pair for DSL only should not affect the DSL in any way.

I've had enough. They're now trying to shedule tech visits for times when I'm not home (or anyone else for that matter). I will, most likely, be getting rid of the DSL very soon and switch over to Earthlink Cable.
