| Upgraded :) Yesterday I decided to upgrade my PC! I picked up a 80GB SSD, 1 TB Software/Game drive, and a nVidia GTX470 video card. All and all these upgrades are very nice! -- Affordable Web-Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Ventrilo, & Teamspeak services since 1999 @ »www.deadlyservers.com |

My core 2 duo boots an old well used and bloated vista 64 from a hd in 45 seconds. My i7 boots win 7 from an intel ssd in 15 seconds. |

That might be worth the price of ssd ....If I turned my computer off. The speed I could care less as its fast enough for what I do and the boot times are also worthless as I keep my computer on and logged into the only account...mine.

But you guys go ahead and buy'em up! I need those prices to come down before I jump ship. |

Yes, but if you read what I said the speed is fine for what I do and currently the price point per GB is not worth the extra seconds in improvement.
Once the price comes down to current harddrive levels then yea. |

MrPremium join:2002-12-25 | reply to Defiance82 SSD will only let your OS, assuming you install your OS on the drive, boot faster. And will allow applications to slightly load and run faster, i think its majorly overrated. And I think people really need to look at the benchmark scores. The price is clearly not worth the performance benefits. |

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | reply to Defiance82 I think when SSD really go lower in price like $160 for 80GB or 100 then we can think about installing games on it.. but if games still load as they do it seems pointless :-/ |

The price is clearly not worth the performance benefits. Keep in mind that it is not just benchmarks and faster speed. SSDs have no platters and moving parts, and will fail much less often. So a lot of people buy them for reliability.
For example, I just had a 150GB Raptor 10k drive fail, and a 1TB 7200 Samsung fail....will see if they will RMA for me. |

OctaveanPremium,MVM join:2001-03-31 New York, NY kudos:1 | reply to Defiance82 I had some of the same concerns with SSDs as has been expressed here. However, when I actually bought an SSD and used it on my own hardware I was quite pleased with it. Very pleased indeed and in fact I was sorry I had put buying an SSD off.
As for price per gig, I can recall buying an 8GB Maxtor HDD for about ~$100+ as one of my first upgrades a long time ago. I probably averaged about ~$100 for individual HDD purchases through the years and buying a 64GB SSD at about ~$120 or so isnt drastically outside that price point. The difference here being that with HDD one purchases storage gains with modest speed increases as time goes on and with SSD one purchases speed gains with modest storage increases as time goes on. Or at least that's how I see it.
In any event Im glad I stopped making excuses. As with HDD I dont expect to buy one SSD and be set for life so I know Ill be buying many of them over the years. Right now I have 4x SSD drives and I would prefer not to have to run a system without one.
As for price drops I have heard that once Intels newest SSD generation hits that one of their 80GB SSD models will hit the price point of the current 40GB model. I think the 160GB will hit current 80GB prices or so I have heard. |
