no, not really. but it's worth free.

They sent me an email saying since I was a former subscriber I could get in early and start playing on the 8th. The only problem is, the only way back in is to reactivate the account for $15/month!! That's not free!

I don't understand the "headstart" part. The game has been around for a couple years, is everyone rerolling or what?

I think the game is really good. Been playing about 3 years. Almost from launch. However, a lot of what will make it good, like any MMO, is the social aspect. If you're in a good kin (guild), it will be a lot more fun than not. Generally, the players are more mature than in WOW.

It's not perfect. The PvP, is a much ignored part of the game, and I think their last big raid (Barad Guldur) is a pain.

I been playing the closed beta since July. It's pretty good. Definitely set to be one of the better F2P MMO's. Nothing new or spectacular though.

Can I play an Uruk right from the start, now? Do I have to play a "good" character to a certain level? I seem to remember that being the case way back when.

Man, I wish City of Heroes was F2P, I'd be all over that. Lotro didn't even feel like it was part of the movies to me, other than the cut scenes.

I don't think Turbine aimed the game to be like the movie. Or do you mean the overall epic feelin'?

I suppose the epic feeling. But then again, I might just be burnt out on Fantasy MMO's. It just felt really generic.

CoH sucked. I played the trial. Got to level 8.

I'm a comic nerd, so it appealed to me I suppose.

I don't think F2P players get access to PvP (and therefore an Uruk) at all, not even for a fee. That may change at some point. But yeah, even a paying customer had to play a non-monster player until level 10 to get access to monster play PvP. Still the case.

if lotro would just release or allow players to play the other side (leveling up and so) it's population would grow.

lotsa folks been sayin the same thing.

but it's lore-wise impossible.

the "other side" are doomed to lose. Turbine dont want ppl to invest too much stuff on an Uruk-Hai just to have it hit the real end-game and say "ok, time to die." and thats the end of it.
its unfair for them and can't say otherwise to the lore.

there are no continuing battle in LOTR lore. once Turbine released the Mordor expansion, that's the end of the line for one side.

that said, yes, if Turbine invest more on the PvP, the game would grow by leaps...

Blizzard created the lore so they can make changes as they wish.

Tolkien Estate controls the LOTR intellectual property and they won't allow a fully fleshed out Evil faction. So it's not even Turbines decision. They were lucky to get what they could for the evil side.

You can create evil toons and level them, but only in PvP map.

And the leveling is a little different mechanism than the traditional way. New Skills and such can only be bought with "Destiny Points", which are earned at a very slow rate by killing NPCs, or faster by completing quests and killing players in the "Free Peoples" faction in PvP. To gain rank (level) "Infamy Points" are needed. These can only be gained by killing free peoples in PvP. Generally, Monster Player characters are really easy to kill until Ranks 4 and higher.

I have a Rank 8 Warg Stalker on Nimrodel.
