| What will it deliver ? TV service consists of content and delivery.
Google may be able to deliver. But until it announces deals with major production companies and/or TV networks, it won't have much to deliver on its fancy service.
Apple just unveiled its scaled down AppleTV with TV program rentals for $0.99. But only ABC and Fox agreed. No NBC or CBS programming available.
And Apple will then have to negotiate in Canada with the rights holders to be able to offer the service. When Global and/or CTV buy exclusive rights to air a US program in canada, they really mean it and will prevent any other company from making that content available over the internet. (this has nothing to do with CRTC BTW).
Google will have to do th same negotiations everywhere, UNLESS IT STARTS TO FUND ITS OWN PROGRAMMING. And Google might have the money/clout to do that. If it becomes the rights holder for a programme, it can have its own worldwide distribution rights and use its content delivery paltform.
And if Google were to produce a real hit, it would provide a lot of motivation for people to buy Google enabled boxes to watch that program. |
