Download Speed

Does it make any sense for two websites to reflect a major difference in download speed. For example, when I use www.speedtest.net I get around 1.0 Mbps. When I try www.speakeasy.net/speedtest I get around 6.8 Mbps. This is on my desktop. My laptop, which is connected to same router, get around 6.8 Mbps on both. I think my desktop is too slow, but why the difference in speed comparing the two speed tests. Many thanks for any guidance.

Speed testing is an inexact science. You don't mention which specific locations that you are testing at on those two sites. Are you testing at the very same location every time ? For example.. on Speedtest.net you should be testing at the closest test site to your hometown. Actually on any speed test. the father away from your home you test, the slower the speed will be usually.

Based on the time of day you could be getting lower speeds. Say if you tried Speedtest at 5pm and you get 1 Mbps on your desktop, then tried Speakeasy at 10 pm and got 6.8 Mbps that could possible answer your question. As I understand it, when more people are on, your speed will get slower with cable internet.

Try different times of the day, multiple times and see what you get. A little program I tend to use that, I think, helps with speeds is TCPOptimizer. You can get it from Download.com. If you have the urge to try it, you simply run it, set your speed on the slider bar that you should be achieving, click Optimal settings at the bottom, uncheck PPPoE, click apply, reboot, and you are done.

Just my 2 cents. Hope you get it fixed.

It doesn't matter what time I try the test, it is consistently the same speed. The server location is also very confusing. With speedtest.net, I am using the server in Kansas City, MO (where I am located) and speakeasy.net uses Chicago, which is the closest to me. But, speakeasy.net has the fastest speed.
Maybe it is just the age of my desktop, it is about 10 years old.

Did you try www.speakeasy.net/speedtest ??

I got the slow speed on speedtest, but then I have over 6 MB at speakeasy.net
