Power Supply and Memory question for upgrade

Hello all. First, here are the specs of my current system:

AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800 (2.0 ghz)
Epox EP-9NPA+ sli 949 found here: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···13123246
Hiper 580 watt modular Power supply found here: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···17128001
EVGA Nvidia 7900GS video card
2 gb of RAM
3 x 500gb 7200rpm SATA drives

I understand that this system is nearing ancient. I bought it all in January of 06. I am planning on doing a piece by piece upgrade and my first step is the video card followed by the memory.

I am planning on purchasing a Nvidia GTX 460. My question is: Does the power supply in my system support the power requirements of this card? I'm really out of the loop as far as technology goes these days and I wasn't sure if it had the necessary connections required or if it was high enough wattage to support it.

My second question is about memory. I was planning on buying dual 1gb chips to bring the motherboard up to its max 4gb. In the future I see myself purchasing a Intel i7 and I would like to buy memory that is going to both help now and be compatible with my new board/cpu combo in the future. (6-12 months from now) Is this possible?

Let me know if any other info is needed, what works, and whats the best solution for my current plans!

Thanks.

the psu is fine for a 460. The memory, don't worry about it. Whatever you buy for this computer you have will NOT work in a new i5/i7, period. You will have to buy new ddr3 memory when you decide to build a new computer.

Is DDR3 backwards compatible with whatever is in my system now?

PSU should be fine it has 2x 6-pin pcie power connectors and looks like that's exactly what the gtx 460 needs.

No versions of RAM, ddr/ddr2/ddr3, are in any way compatible with each other.

You'll have to buy the new mobo, CPU and RAM all in one shot like I did when I upgraded from my athlon x2 s939 setup this year.

Hey at least PCIe has stayed the same and you don't need to upgrade the power supply...

I would not bother buying more DDR ram. Its cost has actually gone up, it costs more per GB than ddr3. Those 2 1GB sticks will cost you $80 while you can get 2x2GB ddr3 for less than $100.
