Re: What in the world?

How did an article related to Verizon's latest successes turn into a Tmobile/AT&T Rant Forum? Does anyone have anything intelligent to say on the subject or just random screaming (via text/all caps/curse words)?
Because the data isn't biased towards Verizon, but reports on all carriers.
Karl, you might consider starting a Rant/Rave Forum just to hate on each carrier. (we all know you would personally spend 2-3 hours daily giggling in the AT&T hate forum).
There is a rant/rave forum already. No need for another one!
Now that I've aired my feelings on other posters' feelings, I'll actually address the subject. I put little stock in the majority of these studies, even one with a good reputation such as J.D. Power and Associates. I used to waste my time looking over the studies, trying to find holes, trying to verify if they are true.. etc... quite frankly, it was all a waste of my time.

Essentially they all have some level of bias, and gaps, not to mention the data can be interpreted differently depending on who is reporting the data.
Very true. Very few studies have the ability to scientifically test the networks, so most studies we tend to get are biased by perception ("happiest" customers) or by circumstance (dropped calls).
The only thing I find recently that is a good indicator (long term) is money...If companies sell good products/services.. the money comes in. OK.. so here comes all return fire towards me about AT&T, how they aren't good, yet they still make money.. yea yea.. we've all heard it all before and get it. My opinion is that in the long run, the best providers will survive, and if AT&T (or TMO, or VZW, or Sprint) continues to have network/customer service woes, their profits and stock will begin to fall. Follow the money...

Ok.. I've mentally prepared myself for the return fire.
You probably should have used that cognitive ability for thinking of a better way to measure "good" companies. Had you done that, you would have taken into account how marketing affects perception, customer happiness, and thus income. For example, Sprint's network (including roaming) is identical to Verizon's. For 99.5% of users, it's irrelevant that they can't roam for more than 250mb. Most people live and work in cities, and they travel on interstates. Then there's the perception that ATT's network is the fastest, although ATT's oversaturated 7.2mbps network is, in real-world-tests, slower than T-Mobile's. But marketing tells customers that they're getting the best, so they believe it.

We people are very susceptible to marketing and groupthink. Verizon and ATT happen to spend more on marketing than almost any other company in the world.

You'd also take into account what role acquisition plays. Namely ATT and Verizon buying up dozens of mid-to-large regionals, while Sprint and T-Mobile tried to re-invest in their own existing networks.

Or you'd take into account the benefits that Verizon and ATT's decades-old wireline networks play in lowering deployment costs. Or the effects that CDMA's EvDO had in capitalizing on 3g data growth, while ATT and TMO had to build new UMTS networks from the ground up to compete. Or how TMO had to wait 2 years for the government to vacate spectrum that it had bought. Or what role spectrum ownership has played with regards to deployments. 850 and 1900 each have their benefits and issues.

So yeah, there's your return fire.

OH SNAP!!!

A well thought out response, with big words....

Though.. I will say this. I do agree that public perception plays a large part (iPhone), though it's the other factors you mentioned that I think will be interesting to watch with the upcoming deployment of LTE networks and each company starting on even footing.

Some would say that because Verizon has a head start (compared to ATT/TMO) for LTE buildout, but I disagree... simply because of their over deployment of FTTH with FIOS has drained a lot of their capital (without the expected return). Not to mention their ongoing list of acquisitions... I get the feeling they will hit a wall financially.

My bet is on Metro PCS...

FYI, Sprint's roaming is unlimited, both voice and data.

Not according to their TOS:

Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes.

Yeah, my t-mobile service shows the same thing. "unlimited". Doesn't mean I still don't have a 10gb cap.
