[Other] Cisco 6509 Possible Distance Issue

I just want to get your thoughts on this before I start spending money.

Cisco6509 with 10/100 ports
Patch Panel
Patch Panel - other floor
Patch Panel - other floor
Workstation

Windows Server 2003 is assigning IP addresses.

Here is the issue: Workstations are taking over 30 seconds to get an IP address. Also we have some stations that the network link goes up and down like a yo-yo or stops working at random times.

If we put a a cheap switch under the station and connect it to the data port and then to the computer the DHCP is almost instant and the connection becomes stable.

Question: Is this a distance issue from the 6509 OR a setting on the 6509 that can be changed.

If it is a distance issue does anyone know of a source to get a single port extender or booster.

You haven't said what the distances are OR how the switch/workstation/hub are configured.

Login to the 6509 and look at the port statistics. Look at the counters on the workstation. If I had to guess, the nic in the workstation isn't up to the task. While the standard may say 100m, few cheap nics have the power to push through 328ft of cat5.

(This is a rather obvious Bad Network Design(tm).)

It sounds like distance issue due to inside-wall wiring.

What speed do you expect that come off the wall? 100 Mbps? 1 Gbps? 10 Gbps?

Once you have the expectation, assess the wiring specification to see if it match your expectation using something like Fluke meter. When Fluke meter reading is lower than the expectation, you may want to either fix or upgrade the wiring.

is portfast turned on for the switchports the workstations are plugged into on the 6509?

I'm guessing it's not. I have heard of this before and thanks for reminding it. I've heard it will take 30seconds to more for the ports to kick in and with the switches on the ports they stay alive and respond faster

Was the "cheap switch" you put between stations and Catalyst 6509 switch configured to do portfast? If not, then portfast configuration is not the issue. Further more, I doubt that any cheap switches support portfast feature in the first place.

I believe the cheap switch you put in acted as "signal repeater", minimizing the distance issue between stations and the 6509 switch. As I suggested previously, reviewing inside wiring condition should be the first approach to evaluate your infrastructure.
