This really pisses me off...

They are COMPLAINING about being forced to work PAID overtime? Give me a freaking break! My significant other has been out of work for 10 months.

If they don't like their jobs, then guess what -- there are over 10 million unemployed right now who would be happy to work all that overtime.

Sounds like they need to re-evaluate the workforce and get some people in there who want to work instead of complain!

Some people are so depressed they can't work. They make take drugs and not sleep well at night and feel tired everyday.

While some jobs may offer full benefits, health insurance, sometimes they won't cover some instances and you may even have no time to even visit a doctor.

I would appreciate paid overtime opportunity though but not sure for how long

then maybe your SO should think outside the box. Mine? She's gonna have a baby and i'm going to bring in the extra income by picking up extra contract work. Life isn't handed to us on a silver platter. You have to get out there and earn what you make and not expect to be entitled to a job, etc.

People tend to forget this.

The whole mentality of 'go to school, earn an education, and work a job for pennies on the hour' is finally catching up to people.

How is this for a teaser? I never went to college, i don't have student loan debt, and I make a hell of a lot more than you.

Get out there and earn your living or tell her to do the same. You might think i'm being an ass, but i'm not. If i can do it, you can.

And just how do you know what I make?

You need to get off your high horse, because you are no better than anyone else here.

I never said i was better than everyone else. I'm tired of people bitching that their aren't any jobs and we should be 'grateful' that our 'masters' (employers) allow us to keep our 'jobs'. You all have the ability to find your own path. Not many people realize that. This is the reason why 95% of the wealth is controlled by 2% of the population. They've figured that out. Modern day slavery at its best.

The Pendulum does swing both ways, and History shows that abuse in Management and the Labor Force has caused problems. Bottom Line, if you are not happy and enjoying where you work, find a new job. Education will give you this flexibility, College is not for everyone, but you do have Vocational Training.

As most of you know, I retired from PacBell, and worked on both sides of the fence...Employee and Management. PacBell, AT&T now, was a true Corporation where Dilbert was created. I worked my way up from a C.O. Frame Person to a Second Level Service Manager. I finished my College Education while working full time. I did see a lot of this attitude we are talking about here, where people just hated their jobs with no pride at all. Unless you were born with a Silver Spoon, you are going to work most of your life. So you better find a job that you really Love, or you will be miserable, and mad all the time and probably die early an unhappy person.

You need to redirect your animosity. You should be mad at these OT-enforcing employers not the workers. Your SO is out of work because companies like this are forcing existing workers to work overtime instead of hiring your SO to do the work.

So in the end they get shoddy work from overworked worn out employees, that will feed a cycle of more rework, and required OT. Instead of doing the proper thing for the community and just hire more workers long term.

Well I'll tell ya what. I feel bad for people that are unemployed and seeking work and not finding it BUT...it's a matter of perspective. It's the grass looks greener syndrome. Most likely, people that think they'd like this scenario would become the complainers after a while anyway. Have you ever been forced to work that much? You might be real happy about it in the beginning but after a while you'd get tired of it, especially when you try to go home and "the man" is telling you that you gotta go back out. Tired? Too bad. Get hurt or have an accident and it's your fault. Why? Because you've been trained in all aspects of safety. Then the thing is to tell the boss it's not safe cuz you're too tired and don't want to put "anybody" at risk. Most workers don't mind working a reasonable amount of OT and some don't want any and some will take it all. Workers should complain if they're not being treated fairly. All workers. Union or not. Being overworked is not as fun as it may sound.

These guys aren't doing anything they didn't vote for in their contract. I find it funny that they complain about it, yet they are the ones who voted for it. Sounds to me like the union isn't doing its job, or they aren't reading their contract. Either way, nobody's fault but their own and I stand by my statement of if they won't do the job under the conditions they VOTED to do it in, then someone else can.

If they didn't want to work that much they had ample opportunity to craft a contract that forbid the company to do that.

For what its worth, I do agree they should hire more workers -- but then again the union and the contract doesn't allow that, or makes it a process that takes far too much time and effort to do so. No company is going to hire 100 additional workers to take up the slack if they know they can't reduce the labor force in 6 months without a fight from the union. There are plenty of part-time and temporary workers who probably would jump at the chance, if it was allowed.

I really question the value of unions and contracts nowadays.

Amen to that.

And I don't buy for a second that these people are somehow "irreplaceable." If we could fire and replace a bunch of air traffic controllers in the early 1980s for the same reasons then this bunch of people could also be so easily replaced.
