Quick question: Can we use another ADSL2+ modem (specifically a netgear DGN1000) with the u-verse HSI service, or are we stuck with the Motorola 2210-02-1ATT modem?

No. UVerse HSI is not ATM based like traditional ADSL systems. (thus the -1ATT model number.)
