Re: [general] cable internet stream but only have telephone jack

Please break that run-on sentence into several complete sentences, I couldn't figure out what you want.

For cable internet, the coax cable goes to the modem, then Ethernet comes out.

For DSL, the phone line goes to the modem, then Ethernet comes out.

If you have cable internet, then you need a cable modem. A DSL modem will not work for cable internet. Just like a cable modem will not work on a DSL connection.

Well, if you are in a place where the phone jack wiring is Cat5....my place is.

Well, there is such a thing as a balun that goes between CATV and Cat5. And, in theory it probably doesn't use all the pairs in the Cat5...so if you don't need more than 100BaseT...you could split the Cat5 down do both ethernet and the CATV together.

I have no idea what kind of cross talk doing CATV and 100BaseT on the same Cat5 is going to be like, etc.

As it is, I use my apartment's Cat5 phone wiring to do 1000BaseT networking....

Not sure Telco Cat3 would handle CATV... Some places have worse...I once lived in a place where the phone jacks had just cheap speaker wire....was really annoying having to listen in to my neighbors (and they didn't like that I was doing a lot of dialup....)
