BarneyBadAss posted : Hmmmm....

That almost looks like a thermal epoxy... what kind of HS was it tied to? Aluminum, Copper, ???

When you got the HS off the cpu, what did it look like?? was it clean or did it have junk on it too?

Um... on another thought... there was a time when the thermal compound was a tape ... (actually it was a tape with a thermal epoxy (see the glossy edge on the far right hand side of your pic?)
and when the CPU got up to temp (usually after several hundred hours of being cycled on and off) the epoxy cured.

You might try a little acetone (I'd use a q-tip) dip one end into the solvent and see if some of the epoxy comes off (from a point in the middle of your thermal compound). Please be careful using the acetone since it has a nasty habit of liking to dissolve many plastics (actually it melts many plastics).

Edit: BTW... if acetone doesn't do the trick, then you'll most certainly be relegated to some kind of grinding method... (of course, you might call the manufacture and see what kind of compound they used in the first place and you might inquire how to get it off).
--

---Barney
