 | Phone company says I have all digital lines but still 28.8 They have done a lot of work and replaced the outside box and 2 separate tech have verified that I have all digital lines from the main office and that my low connect speed has to be my ISP. I have had dial-up a long time at other places and know all the usual stuff to check, but 28.8 is it and on several computers and even outside at the box. My ISP says its not them. Any ideas? Also any dialup ISP provide free tests for a day or 2 to see how well they connect? |

 | Had a 3rd tech today and have to make the decision to just leave dial up. No one cares about it or supports it anymore. If I can connect in the 40k range it works well with me, but at 28.8 it even makes the graphic accelerator useless. I believe my telephone company is most likely betting that if I cancel dialup I'll get one of their DSL packages, of course to get a decent price you need a 1 or 2 year contract. I won't go with them. Goodbye dial up, you served me well for a long time. To the telephone company who's only goal is profit and not service, see you in hell. |

| Not sure what you mean when you say you have all digital lines. Unless you have ISDN, in which case you should be getting data rate of 64 or 128 kbps, the connection to your home is analog.
V.90/92 mode needs one and only one digital to analog conversion between ISP and customer. If modem cannot sync at V.90/92 mode it automatically falls back to V.34 with maximum speed of 33.6 kbps. So unless your circuit is very long the most likely cause is that more then one conversion conversion exists between you and the ISP.
If you are interested in the gory details I've posted more info on my site: »www.tschmidt.com/writings/POTS_M···ents.htm

 | Thanks for the reply and for the link. Your section labeled "26.4 kbps, perhaps with occasional 24 and 28.8 (ITU v.34 protocol)" explains my situation. In short, I've used dial up a long time and know most the secrets if you will. After I moved to my new place 26-28k was the max. I never had connected that slow before nor can I find any place in this town that connects this slow. Every tech than comes out or phone tech has a different opinion, but 2 said that I had all digital lines, I assume analog over digital lines, except one area and that was the cause of the slow speed. All tech reports an excellent noise ratio, but half the time they or the phone techs also show a "fault" on my line which they always dismiss as a usually test error, we get them all the time. It was to be replaced and if it did or not I don't know, but zero change. I contract at a place so old that it still has dial phones and I connect faster there. I've lived in very remote areas and travel to remote areas often and still never connect this slow. My connection at the outside customer terminal is the same speed, thereby eliminating any "inside" issue. Several computers show the same speed. There simply has to be something limiting the speed here that has never been present any other place I used dial up. I fail to see any reason why at least a 38k+ connection is not attainable. Still slow but not when you consider a 40-45k connection which is what I usually had is excellent for my simple needs. Any ideas? |

I've lived in many homes growing up and some homes would only connect at 26,000, some 28,800, and some 31,200. There was only one place I remember being able to connect at 49,333. These were different homes all over town, often 10+ miles apart. I used many different ISP's and many different computers/modems over the years.
Sadly, phone lines can only support so much and some of the lines on the poles/underground have been there for 60+ years. |
