We've seen our current federal government intervene in labour disputes for CP and Air Canada in the past two years. Given that our current PM is a hockey fan (poor him, he's a Leafer), will he order the NHL back to work and binding arbitration? I somehow doubt it. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars - Peart / Lifeson / Lee Join Team Helix |

A) this is after all, a game, leisure entertainment... sure jobs are at stake other than the players', but it's non essential.
B) The conflict spans Canada & the USA. I doubt even IF the Canadian side did something like that, what would happen? only the 7 Canadian teams would play? Doubt it. -- GO BLUE JAYS!

What about players buried in the minors, like the Rangers' Wade Redden? Or is his contract done now? |

| said by IsItDoneYet:Wade Redden is laughing his ass off right now. It appears he still has two years left at $5M a year... Question is, does he get paid during the lockout, even if he hasn't played an NHL game in 3 years, his contract was originally signed to play in the NHL, and the only reason he isnt playing in the NHL is because his team has decided to bury his salary so it doesnt affect the salary cap... -- GO BLUE JAYS!

KardinalDei Gratia ReginaPremium join:2001-02-04 N of 49th | I think Redden continues to play in the AHL as that's where he is. He cleared waivers and would have to be brought back up through re-entry waivers to be an NHL player again and be locked out. The Rangers were already resigned to paying his salary while he's in the minors, so I can't see them trying to stop paying it with the lockout as then they'd have to send him down again and continue to pay him for the rest of his contract anyway.
And Redden is making $6.5M per year on his present contract -- he can thank Slats for that one.
I think @DownGoesBrown had a good call with this thought:
Since the nickname thing is working so well for NFL players, I propose we all start referring to Gary Bettman's third lockout as GBIII. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars - Peart / Lifeson / Lee Join Team Helix |

You should be the last person complaining about rants. Flashback. CFL last year. You wanted Wally to be fired after first 5-6 six games. And who won the Grey Cup and Award? Wally.
So you have no credibility other than watching and posting about any games.

If they dont like how much money players make then tell their GM not dish out such ludicrous contracts.
Not bad for illiterate. And bad news for GrammerNazi.
A perfect example is the Minnesota owner Craig Leipold, who is also a member of the NHL, Selanne writes (roughly translated). He signs two players, Zach (Parise) and Ryan Suter, to 13-year contracts worth more than $100 million (per player) and tells the hockey world how excited the Minnesota is with its fresh purchases. The next day, he puts on an NHL jacket, going to the other side of the table, and tells the same hockey world how incomprehensible these new long-term contracts are. Come on! No teams are forced to pay such sums, and the 13-year contracts are absurd. It is their decision! |

Re: [Hockey] Official~ NHL thread...........scores and highlites Francois is not going anywhere, hes the best goalie coach on the planet, Burke said at the time. (Removing him) is not changing our struggles in net. Im not replacing a coach because we have two young goalies who are battling right now.
The Maple Leafs general manager told the teams website that the goaltending guru was not going to be re-signed by the Leafs because the coaching staff was unhappy with Allaires techniques.
I regret that I have to deal with this matter publicly but I feel the need to respond, Burke told the website. Was there interference from the staff as he said there was? Yes. But it was done reluctantly and it was done to change elements of our goaltending that was sub-par. |

| Jim Devellano's interview on the lockout »islandsportsnews.net/component/c···enior-vp
he has some interesting points...........and the Wings got fined $250k for this ?
quote: ISN: Last thing Jimmy, any thoughts on players moving on and playing for the KHL or other European Leagues during the lockout?
"The players are doing what they have to do, but it's funny, you talk about solidarity and a handful have already bolted. You know who they are...like they need the money...yeah right! But I would caution them to be very careful not to get hurt because as of two days ago, we pulled all their league insurance (dental, medical, player) and all the benefits for each player, so if they get hurt, the NHL will not pay them one dime until they are cleared by league doctors and to the owner's satisfaction that the player is 100% fit and able to perform."
ISN: Do you think the fans will miss the NHL if it is suspended for any length of time?
"Remember it is just the NHL that is on strike, not any other league. Fans of the game should go see their AHL, ECHL or other minor pro team, or more importantly, to the best of your ability, support your local junior and minor hockey teams. Show these kids how much you really care for hockey. The NHL situation will get sorted out, but its complicated - I'm in the middle of it and its complicated for me too - and may take some time. Until then, go out and enjoy the game at the grass roots level and have some fun."

| I think it's basically over this quote..
quote: "It's very complicated and way too much for the average Joe to understand, but having said that, I will tell you this: The owners can basically be viewed as the Ranch, and the players, and me included, are the cattle. The owners own the Ranch and allow the players to eat there. That's the way its always been and that's the way it will be forever. And the owners simply aren't going to let a union push them around. It's not going to happen."

Re: [Hockey] Official~ NHL thread...........scores and highlites Meanwhile, the preseason is now officially cancelled through Sep 30. NHL still has the preseason listed for the first two weeks of October and the regular season starting Oct 11 but who knows if any of that will happen. All the NHL is saying is they "hope" to have a meeting this week but is once again putting the onus on the PA to start making concessions. |
