For the last several months I have been seeing SUV's (with Alcatel-Lucent logos on them) parked on the sides of the roads with big antennas attached to them and they would just sit there for hours. I figured they were doing tests of some sort. I was talking to a friend about what they were doing because one day I saw them parked where he works and he said they were doing 4g testing for Verizon.
Anyhow, yesterday my buddy told me he got broadband installed and that it was wireless through Verizon. I figured it was just 3g. But then he showed me a speed test and he was getting or 12mb down and 4mb up!!! He told me that the installer said they are doing a 60 person beta test (service is free) and then they would have to pay afterwards.
I asked my friend what the modem looked like and he said about a 10"x10" black box. I searched all over the internet for more info about the 4g modem or just more info on 4g in general. However, it seems like Verizon is trying to keep it a secret.
I asked my friend to take some pictures of the modem and as soon as he sends them to me I will post them.
The town that this is in is Edinboro, PA. It’s only a town of under 10,000 people, but it does have a PA state university.
I figured I would post this info about the 4g in case anyone was interested because I can’t seem to find any info on Verizon’s 4g, modems, or locations of service. |

wig58, 12.97Mbs is 13 megs in my book. Very nice speed at 5 miles out of town, but it is on an unloaded tower and system. Will be great if you could post more info about the device. |

| Could you have him do a »testmy.net/ and a »www.speedtest.net/ speed test? Also try to download three big iso files from three different servers at the same time to find the average speed. What about ping times, do a »www.pingtest.net/ test. |

If you have an NFL team in your city, you are getting 4g. Verizon stated the 30 markets would be NFL markets.
There are 32 teams, 2 in New York. Oakland and San Francisco are not that afar away. |

I stopped over at my friends today and took some pictures and ran some tests. All I have to say is this service is unbelievable! Speeds are insane, only problem is the ping times are a little high but what do you expect from wireless I guess. Also, for some reason even though were located on the east coast it seemed like I was getting better pings and way faster speeds from tests off the west coast. The internet was so fast I had to fired up SABnzbd to download a file off astrawebs server, because couldn’t find a server to max it. Anyhow I'll let the pictures do the talking! |

| What hooks up to the WAN (red) port on the back of the Thomson TG789vn? Is it hooked to an inside Internet gateway/modem or an outside mounted wireless unit? |

| This is all very interesting, an outside antenna/modem unit! Are you certain this is for use with the Verizon LTE 700 MHz band?

This setup could work for a fixed installation, but it would really seem to good to be true. For this to work the outside contraption is obviously the modem and is handing off via outdoor coax, then converted to Ethernet then plugged into the Thomson modem.
Would seem like a good setup, but almost too good to be true. I hope its how they plan to role out fixed installs. |

From what my friend told me I guess Directv and Verizon teamed up for this new service. A directv installer actually came out and installed everything. The only reason I could see them teaming up with directv would be because of a fixed install setup, so maybe this is what they will be doing once its available. |
