Seminole, FL | How to use MAC spoofing with Motorola SBG6580 cable modem I upgraded from broadband (20m speed) to wideband (40m speed) several months ago. On the setup page of that modem which you get to with 192.168.0.1 admin motorola, if you click on the BASIC setup, it allows you to enter a spoofed mac address. I need to spoof my mac address to alter my ip address because I go on the irc and get attacked by bots that attempt to sniff out open ports on my computer. Anyway, the mac spoofing on the modem doesn't seem to have any effect on the ip address, so I'm forced to put the modem into bridge mode and use my own router to do the mac spoofing which does work.
My question is.. how do I get the mac spoofing to work with the Motorola modem itself? I would love to eliminate my Linksys router from the setup entirely. Also, if that does work, everybody with an SMC docsis 3 modem will demand a Motorola because the SMC modem has mac spoofing disabled. You cannot enter a mac address with an SMC modem. However, even though you CAN enter a mac address on the Motorola, I haven't yet gotten it to give me a different IP address. I think I am just missing one step.
Incidentally, the SMC modem I used to have for wideband dropped the connection daily and sometimes wouldn't come back for hours. I've had the Motorola for 2 weeks and it hasn't dropped the connection yet! |

Seminole, FL | The people at Brighthouse (roadrunner) set up the bridge mode. I don't think an end user has access to the bridge mode setup.
At the moment, I am not in bridge mode and haven't been for over a month. But soon I will be attempting to use mac spoofing without the router at all. There is a mac spoofing section in the Motorola setup, but the last time I tried, it did NOT give me a different IP address.
People often ask "why do you want to spoof your mac address?" I can think of several reasons - here is another - by spoofing your mac address you can download files from some file sharing websites much faster. There are hundreds or more websites which allow you 1 download with a 30 minute delay between downloads - or you can only download 1 file every 8 hours or once a day. By changing your ip address, you can get around that annoying limitation. |
