NJ Energy Suppliers - Constellation

I recently received a couple of promotions from "Constellation Energy" asking me to switch from PSE&G as the energy source for my home. I ignored the first, but the latest offered a $150 gift card for switching, so I went to their website.

They state that if I sign a 30-month fixed contract / 6 month variable, they will provide 10.1c kWH during the fixed period, and I could cancel at any time during the variable. This is less than my current PSE&G rate which is an average of about 11.5c. This would be some degree of savings, at least during the summer when the A/C was running. I guess one risk is that PSE&G would lower their rates at some point during the contract period. Is this something that happens often? I can't seem to find much info on their Residential pricing history though. Has anyone done something like this switch? With this company? Are there any catches to this?

Thx.

I know for larger customers companies like this can offer a good deal. There are quite a few out there so be sure to check your options. PSEG has an unregulated unit as do a lot of the other traditional carriers out there.

Unfortunately, its only the supply, not the transport, that is price locked. My transport costs are about half the bill.

I figure I'd save $5/month most of the year, and $15 per month for 3 months in the summer. Not worth the effort to switch, IMHO, especially considering all the gobbledygook legalese regarding their rates.

P.S. There are a couple other suppliers. Gateway is one.

alright, well that doesn't sound worth the effort.

You can figure it out for yourself. You'd be saving 1.4 c/kWh. So look at your kWh usage for each month over the past year. Multiple any given month's usage by 0.014 and that's what you would have saved.

Yeah, in my peak month I would have saved about $19.

You can decide if it's worth it to you. I get scared by the following. This is from Dominion, but Constellation and Gateway have similar language:

quote:
Commencing with your June 2011 meter read and continuing through the remainder of the Contract Term, you will pay a market based variable price (Variable Monthly Price Period) that may be adjusted each month by Dominion Energy Solutions based on prevailing market conditions applicable to the generation and Transmission Charges in the JCP&L service territory. At the conclusion of the Contract Term, this agreement will continue on a month-to-month basis at a market-based variable price until cancelled by either party.

Variable Monthly Price Period: The price per kWh will be a market-based variable price that may be adjusted each month based on prevailing market conditions applicable to the generation and Transmission Charges in the JCP&L service territory. The monthly variable price will be calculated as follows: PJM West Hub price per mWh for the billing month as of the 15th day (or preceding business day) in the month preceding the billing month plus a Fixed Adder not to exceed $65/mWh. The price of electricity will equal: PJM West $/mWh plus Fixed Adder $/mWh divided by 1000 to yield the cents /kWh for the customer’s service. The PJM West Hub price per mWh will be a weighted On & Off Peak power price, that is, 55% On Peak, and 45% Off Peak. The Fixed Adder will include all other relevant charges, including, but not limited to, taxes, transmission, congestion, ancillary, and capacity charges.
To which all I can say is: WTF?!?!

Yeah i agree, in constellation's summary, they say I can cancel at any time during the variable period. I don't know how easy it would be to switch back to PSE&G though.
