Rogers and overages...

Hi there.

I am in a house right now in Ottawa that got FTTH (Soho West) so we got free Rogers internet for a year (was supposed to be rogers fastest, but we got X+ at 18mb until today when I went and picked up a D3).

I see their overage charges have gone through the roof, and even after that worried that I will get in trouble if I download way over and just suck up the $50. I want to just spend a month downloading alot of things I want to get, but that could easily hit 1TB or more. Would I get cut off? Or is it literally unlimited more for $50?

I am sick of the low caps, I want to enjoy my Usenet membership to it's full extent

Am I missing something? You got FTTH and you're subscribing to cable? I would think FTTH would at least have higher limits.

From what I heard it was Cisco gear and full GPON deployment but who knows. Maybe they're not ready to go live hence why it says 1 year free on the other page.

That's exactly what I do. My limit is 60GB to for about 3-4 months in a row I do under 60GB, then like last month I just go nuts and do over 1TB. Doubt you'll get cut off, I've done it many times.

Thanks for the answer JMCD. I think I will do that next month then.

BTW we do have FTTH, it is just that it goes into a transformer box that converts it to an analog cable, which is then used for the phone + internet. I can take pictures if you would like. We also have every room in the house with 4-8 ethernet outlets (great for LAN parties).

I was hoping internet would be faster with Fibre optic but I dont know. When we bought the house I was under the impression it is (I am not schooled in fibre optics so bare with me) a connection to Rogers, so I wouldn't be able to use it with anyone else.

So, it's really FTTN at the moment with fibre to cable convertor.

There's no breakthrough FTTH technology.

It's not breakthrough, but it could be FTTH, he said transformer, so maybe it's fibre to his house and then converted.

He has a DOCSIS modem, that's not fibre.

Maybe Rogers is coming out with "Fibor" to compete with Bell's "Fibe".

Agreed. I was thinking they have fibre like FIOS where it's too the house and then there would be an ONT like box to convert to cable and go from there instead of fibre to ethernet like FIOS

I don't know where it goes to, but it is an optical fibre connection, I can see the bright laser emitting from it. The FTTN Vs FTTH debate is possible, I have no idea what it is.

The box that converts the optical connection is powered by a 12v UPS. I will take some pictures when I get home tonight. There is a big warning on the box of exposure to laser radiation and do not disconnect the cable.

It's odd if it's fiber, why they would require coax cable modem.. Normally to my understanding the "BOX" that breaks things out, would simply have LAN ports.

Exactly. No one does coax in home for GPON except for TV. Either it's not FTTH or it's not what this guy is using.

Well Rogers really screwed us. We are supposed to get the fastest internet for a year. Went got D3 modem, they say they can't give us 25/125 because we are locked in at 18/95 only. Not to mention fastest internet = Ultimate...and we are getting royally screwed. I am so happy when we get to leave them.

Here are the pictures though,

Yeah you are getting screwed. I honestly didn't think they could cripple fibre but they've succeeded. DOCSIS over coax over some substandard fibre. No wonder they're keeping the low caps. »www.aurora.com/site/products.an?li=87-10513

So, what they're telling you is that Fallowfield is still only Docsis 2 at the moment, which is why you can only get 18 and not full speed.

All I know is that some of my neighbours have moved in later than me, and are using Docsis 3 on 25/125...they are just renegging on the terms of our free year, stating once it starts it cannot be changed...although our free year clearly states, Rogers Fastest Internet.

Interpretation is the key, and vagueness is allowing this charade to continue.

I am reading about this RFoG stuff, and it says theoretical limit with todays technology is 1 Gbps, is that true?
