3 edits | Changed on the site sticky * improved instant message inbox layout * lower default site width for iPhone users * increased spacing & font sizes on vertical site navigation * you can now extend a smoke-ping when it has one day left to run * phishtracker demon is running again (checking URLs etc) * put ISP logos on home page in 'direct ISP support' forum list * changed /forums/all layout to much rejoicing * fixed some layout issues in forum top headers * spaced out page footer and removed it from iPhone view * put site search box in top right of page * improved layout of site search results * got rid of violently blue 'site tool' rounded corner boxes listing each tool * adjusted style used for quoting in posts and in front page news * 'recent reviews from your zip' populate automatically on the home page * added colors to quick scores in ISP reviews * moved the site black/white/custom/style widgets to the footer * changed front-end server to nginx (load balanced proxy) * removed vast quantities of unread system messages * chased down most performance bottlenecks, now page render performance at peak is pretty much indistinguishable from off-peak. Currently the site generates about 80 "code 200" (not 301 or 302) html responses per second at peak (5000 per minute), and the median page generation time is 5ms. There is no page caching, all pages are generated from scratch even for anonymous users.
* Added a NY server to smokeping, and re-labelled the NY server that was there more correctly as KS! * Fixed smokeping ping utility to correctly sequence ping packets correctly this was causing an issue with a minority of network devices
24th october: * removed megapath speed test made minor change to java test screen layout * Improved layout below the footer with the "most commented" and "most now reading" lists of topics/news * Changed font, spacing, color and layout on home page for current news articles. | | justinAustralian join:1999-05-28 New York, NY kudos:7 Host: IPv6 Business Connectiv.. 4 edits | 25th October * fixed layout bugs showing up under MSIE for 'mini icon bar' * for "old" location of icon bar, added spanner icon to encourage changing position * user change to position of mini-bar, for example, "top" to "left", now cause an automatic reload of the page to show the new position * upgrade code block syntax highlighter to latest version from the pre-historic version, both default (white) and dark themes installed. * pop-up mini windows now have round corners (all except IE) (and drop shadow for chrome/safari) * some minor home page layout & color improvements, both for logged in users and logged out * link color for default theme changed to one less blisteringly blue, makes larger fonts (that are links) look better. * default format for user details in forum posts changed. Now includes "Kudos" line and drops "Clubs" line, plus, is centered.
26th October * Fixed sundry quite minor issues reported with changes above * Fixed a problem with some unusual forum requests hanging up the site * Got rid of "forum topics" from the site "ticker" now it just can show front page news * added %k for Kudos code to i-see-people format options * text color for default theme now backed off to #222 (not pure black). * de-tabled the FAQ pages: FAQs now flow around FAQ table of contents box, etc.
28th October * Removed a large number of unclosed tag (html warnings) from page basic frame, home page, etc * Put italic for outgoing messages in IM Conversations screens * Expanded sitemap.xml and submitted to bing, yahoo slurp * More aggressive about dynamic null routing of evil crawlers / screen scraping clients * De-activated the "project honeypot" links * Disabled the search engine NOARCHIVE meta tag * Fixed the https login page to jump where the buttons say you should jump after login * Changed "small" tag from "80%" to 0.9em (which is larger - same size as "quoted posts"). The "small" tag is used for various things like IM notifications, un-important text and links. * Undid the above change because apparently "small" cannot be styled without introducing browser bugs * Changed the post "thumbs up" function to be ajax inline with the post * Changed to default browser buttons for forum topic "reply" and "qreply" and "next page" instead of clickable gifs * Removed limitation on Anons posting (and therefore bumping) topics that are over 2 weeks old -- as long as those topics have extreme # page views (are probably still "current" or otherwise useful). * Forum topic view "normal/watch" is only available if the topic has been recently updated (1 hour) * Forum topic view option "flat/full" is removed * added a page for viewing all "line monitor groups" »/testhistory?view=all and put this in the "Tools" menu
29th October * Only move cursor focus on page load, to login field / instant message field if focus is not yet on any field at all * Login now doesn't whine about being logged out with different screen and request to logout * login button made bigger * For logged out users, added toggle to site search box to allow google search embedded as an option * For logged out users, enable the same nice pop-up tool tips users get
1st November * Forum headers are re-formatted. If the logo is small, they are incorporated into a full-width single row of detail. If the logo is 55 pixels or more deep, it goes into a rowspan cell, and the forum description (and anything else, such as ISP reviews) is offset to the right. * Individual ISP reviews are re-formatted. The amount of information presented apart from the review itself, is diminished : to just company logo or name, six month rating, and link to company page, where more information can be found including Award if any, more detail on ratings etc. * Beneath the footer, "most people now reading" has been changed to the list of "hot topics", mainly because "most people now reading" often has old topics that google feeds a steady stream of anonymous people to.
November 2nd * Layout bug for firefox (horizontal scrollbar) fixed * Message input areas for instant messages and quick reply auto-resize as you type * jquery js now included in every page, for every logged in user
November 3rd * Modified the blue arrow (unread posts) / table cell stuff to allow for direct click on arrow to honor shift/control. * Fixed jquery.autoresize.js (dynamic resizing textarea) to work with MSIE8, and work better in general than it did out of the box * Fixed layout bug in nested comments (as displayed after news articles) * Moved "qreply" to inline with the post rather than a pop-up. This has a number of advantages especially being left a reminder in the post that you did reply to it.
November 4th * updated jquery to 1.4 from 1.3.2 to fix Safari back-button cache bug * improved format of ISP (or company) listing page * de-tabled digital imaging forum "gallery preview" * /forums/all page now will suggest forums given search terms, via drop-down menu
November 5th * removed jquery for iPhone users because it makes the page load very slowly .. at least until I figure out why * Streamlined OpenID/Google/Twitter sign-in for new users * Streamlined new account registration. Password and Email fields are no longer asked for twice. Changed defaults for all new accounts to have news Ticker off, and mini-bar at top. * Started the process of fixing the ISP review ratings to reflect that the only rating options are 1,2,3,4 or 5. So 1 is really 0%. and 5 is 100%. Where the review scores are shown as a X.X number, the highest is therefore 4.0 (which is full rating in every category). Where the review scores are shown as a percentage, the bottom is still shown as 20%, and that will be fixed shortly - to show a big fat 0%. * changed site message box to show a green tick instead of the BBR icon * FAQs you own & control appear (as a reminder) in your /postlist page * Changed the icon for expanding/collapsing sections * Changed the icon used often in front of links
November 8th * Pre-loaded recent reviews in home page to stop post-page-load update * Forum "Poll" results are viewable in-line, and use the google charts API * Gallery teaser in digital imaging forum put back in for MSIE7 * Added javascript warning when using IE8 running in "compatibility mode" * Further cleaned up page for adding a review * Pre-loaded reviews in the »/reviews page and cleaned up format a little | | justinAustralian join:1999-05-28 New York, NY kudos:7 Host: IPv6 Business Connectiv.. November 12th * Layout for the form for making a post is improved * buried IMGs in posts are auto-fetched and displayed as attachments at the point they were included in the post, if the size is more than 900 pixels (30x30)
November 13th * Line Quality »/pingtest test is improved to be faster, to do a higher bandwidth ping stream and a high packet size ping plot, and the results display is improved to include pop-up explanations for failures and warnings. * Line Quality test is open for anonymous users, lacking some extra features.
November 14th: * Performance improvements for registered users * Bug fixes to auto-resizing textareas * Final 'favorite forums' layout * Minor layout fixes
November 15th: * 1 is no longer the lonely number * fixed drag-drop favorite forum re-order interface * fixed IP mixing with line quality/ping test. These tests are now being completed in literally a few minutes, so the capacity per hour is much higher than it was before * you can highlight inline monospaced code now in posts * Fixed up the format of the iPhone speedtest »i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.html and associated about page * Minor layout cleanup for »/pics/dimaging * removed outline:0 in CSS reset * adjusted color of »/forums/all to match default blue of forum headers, added tool-tips
November 17th * Changed dotted lines in forum headers to solid lines * SQL Performance tuned - increasing page rendering speed * Front page RSS feed is now feedburner feed »feeds.feedburner.com/dslreports and added Twitter follow button, put both in right-hand column * Forum attached images requiring thumbnail because of excess size in bytes now never increased in size, only decreased or preserved (animated gifs) * https ://secure.dslreports.com - eliminated all "non-secure" elements, so that no browser warnings are sent. This domain, with SSL, will be the default for the "ISP Direct" support forums * Improved siteshot to still siteshot 404 URLs, and for URLs returning other errors, to show the error number in pace of the site thumbnail * Fixed URL munging so that google cache URLs are not ruined (as they contain a URL within a URL) * Added drop shadows and rounded corners to bquote boxes, eliminated dotted line
November 18th * going to an ISP direct support forum now flops the user over to https ... and going to a non ISP direct forum changes the user back to http
November 19th * Changed quoted post block coloring to fit with the default theme * Improvements to margin and spacing in quotes * Your post is highlighted with yellow background behind your site name, as it is in quote blocks "said by .." * Changed the ajax "loading" image * Blue arrow on forum topics now shows the appropriate page and pagination of the topic, starting with the first unread post, suppressing the posts you've already read in that page
November 22th * Fixed international (French, mainly) characters in body and title when editing a previously made post | | justinAustralian join:1999-05-28 New York, NY kudos:7 Host: IPv6 Business Connectiv.. Console/Handheld g.. Home/Office setup .. Photos of Broadban..
1 edit | November 27th: * detabled part of vertical nav header and changed load indicator * added new mini bar size "larger" and override to this size for ipad * changed vertical nav page title color
November 30th * Added a new tab to forum hot topics widget which highlights popular new topics related to ISPs (usually, issues of some sort). This tab is the default open tab now, and the home page shows it instead of "hot topics".

* The "forgot password" function now emails a one time use, time-limited, password reset link rather than emailing the users current password to the email address on record.
